What I like about the other party's candidate...

I'm really beginning to tire of the hit jobs and hyperbole from both sides. Obama is a great speaker and has a good measure of charisma. He says great things but is often lacking in details. He likes to sell a bit too much of the pie in the sky for me, he is able to do that based on his lack of a long track record, kinda like how Bush 2 was able to run in 2000. Obama seems very genuine (as much as a politician ever is) and very intelligent. He certainly is a striver and has moved up very quickly, which is not a bad thing but he is pretty light on experience. To be fair, I don't think there is any job that is preparation for being president but I would like to see more experience in government than he has. Personally I will vote for him with reservations. If he had lost in the primaries and then run again in 4 or 8 years I would likely vote for him easily but I am truly concerned he is not ready (yet). I'm not real fond of Biden but I don't find him offensive. He was a poor choice but not a deal breaker to me.

I have always liked McCain. Over his career he's been a social moderate and fiscal conservative that has never felt the need to toe the Republican Party line. He's not afraid to take a hard stand. His temper concerns me, a president should be able to keep that in check but we certainly have lived with presidents with short fuses. McCain also seems like a genuinely good guy and pretty intelligent. I really respect what he went through for his country and his years of service in congress too, he has not just been another party hack like Biden or Inhofe.  I have really disliked his shifting on positions and pandering to the Christian right wing of the Republican party in order to win the nomination. I watched an interview and even his wife isn't sure of his current position on Roe v Wade. I do understand that this is what politicians do, but I still don't have to like it. If he had run as a 3rd party candidate and hadn't made all these assurances about what he's going to do as president to the far right I very likely would have voted for him. His age concerns me and his selection of a light weight right wing Pentecostal fundamentalist nut job as a running mate seals the deal. There is no way I can vote for him when I consider his age and who is running mate is. There is no way I will ever risk having some "new earther" creationist idiot as president of our great nation.

There is hope!

Swake! You are intelligent after all.

Congrats on escaping from Dumbf*ckistan!

I was actually about to draft up a post regarding the personal attacks on both candidates and posters in here from both sides, but you articulated yourself very well.

Obama was not my candidate initially, but after doing some background and fact finding on him, I will vote for him.

At one point in time (2000) I might have voted for McCain.  Back then, he was a true maverick and didn't tow the party line.  It seems to me now, conversely as it was the last 8 years, that the Republican party is fragmented and in-fighting is happening.  I mean, Ron Paul had his own convention, a registered Republican, in the neighboring city of Minneapolis.  Shouldn't that scream of party disunity?  Conservatives are scared that if they take too moderate a stance on issues, that they're going to alienate the 'evangelical right' and part of their base.  I think they worry too much.

I thought the choice of Palin was a from-the-hip selection that McCain made to pander to the religious right and to those moderates who used to favor Hillary.  And while the religious right may have their woman in Palin, I don't think the moderates that were undecided will vote for her.  She's just too much of an unknown factor now.

Palin's approval rating is 58%.  Higher than the Presidential candidates.

I'm attacking her for her own stated religious beliefs that are completely opposed to hard science and are no less nonsense than Tom Cruise and Xenu. Xenu and the idea that the Earth is 6,000 years old are equally stupid beliefs. And she wants her version creationism taught in schools next to science. Hell no. This is her position and is fair game. I didn't attack her hair or anything like that, this is a real position that she has taken. I won't vote for someone with that position, period.

I would also take on her daughter's issue. We can't control what our kids do, but, she is a big proponent of abstinence only education. She needs to defend that stance in light of that kind of teaching's failure in her own home.

I'm not attacking her person, these are positions where she is wrong and her inability to see that she is wrong calls into question her intelligence.

Swake:

Who are you going to attack next?

One Billion Hindus, and their multi-armed God Vishnu?

Their Sacred cows?

Their Reincarnation beliefs?

There are different religions in our world than your Religion of Godless Liberalism.

Yes, Godless.

She was raised in the Assembly of God Church, a recognized Christian Church.

She now attends a non-denominational Bible church.  Those folks take religion seriously.

She's a Conservative Christian.

Correction Swake, "compulsory creationism in Alaska schools" is one of the bigger mis-statements of her positions as governor.  She said it should be allowed if debate comes up.  Mentioning her name in the same paragraph as nutty Tom and Xenu is a quick way to start another baseless rumor about her.  Here's the facts, not digested op-ed from either political bent:

http://dwb.adn.com/news/politics/elections/story/8347904p-8243554c.html

"In an interview Thursday (10/27/2006), Palin said she meant only to say that discussion of alternative views should be allowed to arise in Alaska classrooms:

"I don't think there should be a prohibition against debate if it comes up in class. It doesn't have to be part of the curriculum."

She added that, if elected, she would not push the state Board of Education to add such creation-based alternatives to the state's required curriculum.

Members of the state school board, which sets minimum requirements, are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Legislature.

"I won't have religion as a litmus test, or anybody's personal opinion on evolution or creationism," Palin said.

Palin has occasionally discussed her lifelong Christian faith during the governor's race but said teaching creationism is nothing she has campaigned about or even given much thought to."

Personally, I have a belief that ranges somewhere around evolved creation.  I'm one of those people who looks around me and realizes there's a much greater power at work than random mutations.  Science is imperfect and constantly evolving based on new theories and discoveries.  Who did create all these scientists, anyhow?  All I know is I'm not informed enough to say evolution is the final answer on man and animal-kind. Perhaps you are.

Once you have had a 17 year-old daughter, feel free to lecture the rest of us about our own 17 y/o daughters.  Until you've faced the actual reality, you are just passing un-educated  judgement.  It's not the same to say: "I know someone with a 17 y/o daughter either."  It's like child birth, you'll never know till you've experienced it.

I'm glad to see the family didn't castigate their daughter and they are supportive of her.  Just because her daughter couldn't keep her pants on, it doesn't make mom a hypocrite, nor a poor teacher.  Think about the stuff you did as a teen your parents told or asked you not to do that you did anyway.  Would you ever want others blaming your parents for your own mis-behavior?

Here's the relevant direct quote for you:

"Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information....Healthy debate is so important and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both. And you know, I say this too as the daughter of a science teacher. Growing up with being so privileged and blessed to be given a lot of information on, on both sides of the subject -- creationism and evolution. It's been a healthy foundation for me. But don't be afraid of information and let kids debate both sides."

She is absolutely advocating teaching a specific religious viewpoint alongside a scientific one in public schools.

I am not faulting her for her daughter, I'm faulting her for her position on sex education. I have a daughter getting close to 17 and I can tell you that when you "just say no" to kids that age they often hear "yes" instead of what you intended them to hear. That's the simple answer as to why abstinence only education doesn't work, it didn't work in her own home, yet she's still pushing it. It's a fair topic.

And I really don't like her acting like her daughter's pregnancy is something to celebrate. It's not. Celebrating public teen pregnancies is very dangerous to our society. I didn't like when it happened with Britney Spear's sister and I don't like it here. She should be given credit for supporting her daughter in this situation but celebrating it something else entirely. Kids having kids by mistake is bad, kids thinking it's ok to have kids and having them on purpose because they see it celebrated on TV is scary as hell.

And I will never fall for the rhetoric of Godless conservative holier-than-thou biblical literalist know-it-alls.  [:(!]

At least, not anymore.  [;)]

"Godless" is a interesting book about the failures of Liberalism, written by a sharp elbowed lawyer named:

Ann Coulter.

Wonder how much Barack Bin Obama would relish debating her?

After the debate, Obama's cojones would be confused for Raisinettes.
