This is absolutely unbelievable. Government prosecutors and law enforcement officials using their power to suppress free speech.

If McCain would do better fact checking this wouldn't be happening.  He does have a problem with staying within the confines of the truth.

Repubs are grasping now...but it's not surprising.

Try again, Guido.  According to the piece, they intend to enforce existing Missouri ethics laws. Which is pretty cool, because that's their job.

Gov. Blunt Statement on Obama Campaign's Abusive Use of Missouri Law Enforcement

JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Matt Blunt today issued the following statement on news reports that have exposed plans by U.S. Senator Barack Obama to use Missouri law enforcement to threaten and intimidate his critics.

"St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch, St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer, and Obama and the leader of his Missouri campaign Senator Claire McCaskill have attached the stench of police state tactics to the Obama-Biden campaign.

"What Senator Obama and his helpers are doing is scandalous beyond words, the party that claims to be the party of Thomas Jefferson is abusing the justice system and offices of public trust to silence political criticism with threats of prosecution and criminal punishment.

"This abuse of the law for intimidation insults the most sacred principles and ideals of Jefferson. I can think of nothing more offensive to Jefferson's thinking than using the power of the state to deprive Americans of their civil rights. The only conceivable purpose of Messrs. McCulloch, Obama and the others is to frighten people away from expressing themselves, to chill free and open debate, to suppress support and donations to conservative organizations targeted by this anti-civil rights, to strangle criticism of Mr. Obama, to suppress ads about his support of higher taxes, and to choke out criticism on television, radio, the Internet, blogs, e-mail and daily conversation about the election.

"Barack Obama needs to grow up. Leftist blogs and others in the press constantly say false things about me and my family. Usually, we ignore false and scurrilous accusations because the purveyors have no credibility. When necessary, we refute them. Enlisting Missouri law enforcement to intimidate people and kill free debate is reminiscent of the Sedition Acts - not a free society."

That's an excellent statement from the (R) Governor, especially the part about "Barack Obama needs to grow up."  Kinda makes this official edict of office look more than a little partisan.  Or at least bratty.

I'd hope that the governor could cite specifics of abuse and intimidation that are "reminiscent of the Sedition Act," or perhaps he could reprimand and bring charges against the culprits.  Especially those who, as the original piece says, are enforcing existing ethics laws.

Here is a take on this issue/scandal from Missouri conservatives:

http://stlcofcc.wordpress.com/2008/09/24/obamination-obama-suppoerters-bob-mcculloch-jennifer-joyce-threaten-to-prosecute-people-for-criticizing-obama/

Update:

Barack supporter/prosecutor Jennifer Joyce backpedaling:

http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/political-fix/political-fix/2008/09/joyce-on-truth-squad-not-about-prosecuting-people/

Look at the comments at the bottom, particularly this one which I absolutely agree with:

"'This has never been or never will be about prosecuting people.'

Then, Jennifer Joyce, explain to me why the KMOV report, in which you were featured, states that the Obama campaign is asking Missouri "law enforcement" to "target" people. The report specifies and interviews you, Jennifer Joyce, along with Bob McCulloch, in your roles as "two high-profile prosecutors." The report quotes you two as saying that you "plan to respond immediately" in your role as prosectuors.

http://www.kmov.com/video/index.html?nvid=285793&shu=1

Your veiled threats and attempts at intimidation will not silence critics of "Il Duce" Obama."

This is a sickening abuse of power. I cannot believe anyone can find this form of intimidation acceptable.

God forbid that John McCain might have to stick to the truth in his campaign ads.

The horror.

Yeah, and something else I was thinking about...who is exactly running the state of Alaska?  Last I heard it was McCain's campaign...where's the legality in that?

guido911

It's NOT just about McCain's campaign. It's anyone. If I were to claim that Obama's position on the Illinois "Born Alive" bill resulted in its failure and that Obama was more concerned about a woman's "right to choose" than a infant who survived a botched abortion right to have life-saving measures, Obama would cry foul and I guess could be prosecuted.

If Republicans would simply TELL THE TRUTH, there wouldn't be a problem...

Nothing like hearing say-anything republicans  call Obama a "baby killer".....

http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/429328.aspx

Obama: Let me clarify this right now.

Brody: Because it's getting a lot of play.

Obama: Well and because they have not been telling the truth. And I hate to say that people are lying, but here's a situation where folks are lying. I have said repeatedly that I would have been completely in, fully in support of the federal bill that everybody supported - which was to say --that you should provide assistance to any infant that was born - even if it was as a consequence of an induced abortion. That was not the bill that was presented at the state level. What that bill also was doing was trying to undermine Roe vs. Wade. By the way, we also had a bill, a law already in place in Illinois that insured life saving treatment was given to infants.

So for people to suggest that I and the Illinois medical society, so Illinois doctors were somehow in favor of withholding life saving support from an infant born alive is ridiculous. It defies commonsense and it defies imagination and for people to keep on pushing this is offensive and it's an example of the kind of politics that we have to get beyond. It's one thing for people to disagree with me about the issue of choice, it's another thing for people to out and out misrepresent my positions repeatedly, even after they know that they're wrong. And that's what's been happening.

Well gee whiz if Obama says he supported the Born Alive bill and that those who claim he did not are lying, then I guess that ends it.

Your article does nothing to rebut what Townhall reports. Also, if you read your article, you will find that Obama is lying about McCain's record on abortion. I doubt Missouri's truth squad will be summoned though.

What agenda are you pushing here?
