March 14 - Saint Patrick's Day run (5k)

I've never been able to make it out to this one and I won't be present for this again this year since I will be out of town. It's one of the first major runs of the year. I'm sure there are same day sign ups.

That sounds good, but I won't in Tulsa for that race. Those 5K races are short & fast, the last 5K race I ran was at nearly at full throttle the whole way and I had a pack of runners right behind me, and I was working to beat 3 fast females and 2 men around me during that last mile, I was going full throttle- everyone was huffing & puffin'. I'm looking for something longer like a 10 mile run where I can get warmed up and real lose and just coast at a easy pace thru the middle miles and just floor it the last 1-2 miles. We are having some 5K races on St. Paddy's Day here in Ohio, but it's still pretty cold for running. I'm very intrested in a Easter 10 mile race that is coming up and I hope the weather warms up though. [:)]

You're not going to find a 10 mile race in Tulsa. The closest would be the Tulsa Run (9.3 miles) in the fall...or the handful of half-marathons in the spring and fall.

Most weekend races are 5Ks/10Ks.

There is a really cool 8 mile run/race in June...The Estim8er. No watches allowed...and you don't know the course until the evening before. You guess what time you'll finish and wear it on your bib. Winner is the person that gets closest to their time.

I did it last year and had a blast. I think I was only 20 seconds off...and I finished 11th!

Work crews are making good progress on the park at 41st/Riverside...and the asphalt trail is down and leveled from 41st Street south to (almost) I-44.

We're getting there.

Do they allow "stopwatchs"? That is what I run with. I like to know my time & pace. A 6 mile race or 8 mile race is OK with me, The 5K is allright but it's a bit too short for me, I don't mind running them but there is not much time to get yourself in a good posistion and it's pretty much an all out full throttle run from the start to finish, I like to use the first mile to warm up and get lose and in a 5K you can't do that.. Like I said the last 5K I ran was a real fast one, I was locked in a battle with other runners during the last mile and my legs would not move any faster, a pack of runners was right behind me. For Runners who just like to run for fun and don't care about what time they cross the finish line, the 5K is fine, but I figure if I'm going to run a race I want to win and do the best I can. We have a half marathon race in June and August, and the famous Columbus marathon in October, thousands of runners enter that race.[:)]

My favorite section for running is from the Jenks Bridge parking area  north to I-44 and back.. [:)]

No. No timing devices of any kind. That's kind of the point. I just found it to be a very unique and fun event. And the fastest runner doesn't necessarily win.

If you've been running for years...you probably have a pretty good idea of your pace. I think the lady that won it was only 4 seconds off her guess!

Anyway...just a fun race and a nice break from the traditional runs.

My only prob with that route is the casino crossing area because of the ill-minded drivers racing to get their daily fix.....and the area between I-44 and 56th street, because it stinks over there and it's hard to hyperventilate and dry heave at the same time.

You know, its all about marketing and word choice. The smell... ( Come have a "breathtaking experience" at our beautiful River Parks. We guarantee it will knock you out. ) [:D]

"When you only have two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other."-Chinese proverb. "Arts a staple. Like bread or wine or a warm coat in winter. Those who think it is a luxury have only a fragment of a mind. Mans spirit grows hungry for art in the same way h

waterboy

Or the ever popular, "that's the smell of money being made". More accurately, the smell of money being recycled.

Yes, that casino driveway is a big pain for runners. That is a flaw in the RiverSide Trail design, but it's not super bad, I can deal with it. I favor jogging trails with no street crossings, Omaha has trails that have no street crossings, The city of Omaha has a system of jogging trails like a Interstate highway system with exit ramps up to surface streets at places where the trail passes under the streets. It's really super. You can run your legs off there. There is a  St. Paddys Day 5K race in Columbus, Ohio on March 14th. The first 3 Finishers will get a Plaque, the next 100 people who finish will get a race mug. They won't have any age divisions in the race. The race time of all the runners will still be recorded online. I run faster in races than I do in my training, I guess the competion and adrenlin rush push me harder. Ultra-fit is doing the race. The cost to enter is $29.00 and $35.00 race day. www.omahatrails.com  Click around on some of the trail links for more info. The 6-mile loop trail at Wehrspann Lake is my favorite trail to run when I'm in Omaha, It's funny Omaha has tons of jogging trails and I keep running the same one over & over. Click on that link for info about the Wehrspann trail. [:)]

The Casino is paying to "re-route" the jogging trail to the river/behind the parking lot and structures.

Wow, that's great news. I hope it is "re-routed" so that it bypasses a crossing at both 81st street and all the other entrances to the existing and new casino. There is way too much traffic flow that runs in and out of there.
That means the trail will only run into vehicular traffic at Southwest Boulevard and then not again until Hardvard (which isn't a problem since it's more of a dead end entrance to a neighborhood) and most importantly Yale.

Btw, do you have a source that you can post up citing this?

sauerkraut

WoW That is great news. I like running near the river anyhow- I bet that will cost the casino a pretty penny to do. I'd also like to see the jogging trail extended farther south down past 101st street. Motor traffic & joggers do not mix. I hope this work is done soon.[:)]

The Sheridan crossing is more of a pain, thanks to the lack of a traffic light there. Memorial can be a long wait if you are the sort not to cross against the light when traffic clears.
