I'll state up front that I'm not one for change.  If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Anyway, got my tag renewed yesterday and I had the pleasure of being issued one of their new "Native America" plates.

Talk about UGLY and CHEAP looking.  The letters/numbers aren't stamped anymore, so it looks like a dang vanity plate.

Sigh.

Just about every state is moving to plates that are no longer stamped. Saves $$.

I think the new plates look fine. Like them better than the previous plates.

Not stamped?
I'll bet there will be a guy with an inkjet license plate maker at the next gun show.

if there's one thing i hate is a cheap looking license plate.

I demand quality in my license plate.  Hand made by the finest prisoners in the swankiest ward in McAlester.

At least you never have to look at yours...but, when you're driving you can look at the persons in front of you and laugh at how ugly their license plate is!

Won't be as easy to counterfeit as you might think given the watermark that is on it.  You can only see it when looking directly at the center of the plate.  Can't see it from an angle at all.

I got one last Friday.  They don't bother me at all.  Not sure why people are getting all bent out of shape about it really.

Just off the top of my head, I know Nevada and Nebraska are like that.  They don't have the raised lettering either, and I said the same thing, "they look cheap".  But you can really only tell that up close, not when you are behind one at a stoplight or anything.  I don't think its that big of a deal.

Stamped does seem more "official,"  but they do get warped more often and most states are going away from them ($).  There is some fear of counterfeit plates I suppose, but previously you could just steal a plate from someone elses car and it would have the same effect.  So no huge loss there I suppose (red light cameras maybe?).

The new plates look just fine to me:

Iowa has a flat print with 1/32" aluminum and no beveled edge:

The best authority on plates I found on the net is:

He has not "reviewed" the new Oklahoma plates, but the guy considers the design, the series, the brand of stamp die/print technology.  Everything from 1969 - 2008.  The OK plate is 2009, so its not there yet.  Still, pretty crazy.

Since it appears he does not like the flat plates that are not stamped and have the generic 3M serial font (all of which the new plate has) he most likely will not like it unless he really, really likes the design.

The state of Deleware has plates that are flat and the numbers are hard to see, Indiana use-to have flat plates but I believe they went back to stamped plates. All in all the real reason for plates is so the cops can nab ya.[xx(]

Why do we have a picture of a Samurai Warrior on our liscense plates?

I think it should be the Goddess of Oil. [;)]

While the design was not my first choice, I really don't mind.  Maybe its just me, but I have more important things to worry about.

I like the look ok.

I don't like how they're handling things though.
I bought a new (used) truck in november and when I went to get a tag they had me pay the new sale/title transfer whatever tax but only like $6 for a tag because they would only sell me a tag good until january. They said I have to go back in january and pay for a whole year. And I may have heard this wrong but pay also $15 for the new tag.

Are they forcing people to pay $15 extra for renewal just so everyone can have the same tag?

I still see cars every once in a while with the 80s style setting sun tag or the even older plain green letters on white tag with no picture or design.
