The Tulsa Historical Society is sponsoring an outdoor adventure to the battle sites of Honey Springs and Fort Gibson on Friday, May 1.  The Battle of Honey Springs was in both size and importance the Gettysburg of the Civil War in Indian Territory, for it marked the climax of massed confederate military resistance.  The battle site of nearly 3,000 acres is still wooded and rural, much as it was at the time of the engagement between the North and the South.
Fort Gibson was the terminus of Native Americans and their African-American slaves after their removal from the southeast part of the nation.  The primary purpose of Fort Gibson was, in fact, to keep peace among tribal nations while protecting immigrants and traders.  Within the confines of Fort Gibson National Cemetery, established in 1868, there is interred, at least one veteran of each war in which the United States has fought.
The deadline for making reservations is April 24; reservation forms are at the Tulsa Historical Society, 2445 S. Peoria.  The cost of $79.00 covers transportation by motor coach, lunch, gratuities and entrance to the above sites.   Additional information is provided on the reservation form.  Time permitting, you can call 712-9484 to have the reservation form mailed to you or visit  the museum Tues-Saturday 10:am through 4:pm.
