Do you read the articles you post, or do you just see the line you want and assume the whole thing confirms your biases?

QuoteReid said he talked to Obama in 2006 about running for president, and that Obama expressed doubts about his ability to win.

"I was resolved to stay neutral in the coming campaign, but I told him that in my view the stars could align for him. 'If you want to be president, you can be president now,' I said. 'I don't know, Harry,' he said. 'I don't think so.'"

Neither, I just read the funny parts.

From the article:

Reid, D-Nev., writes: "'That speech was phenomenal, Barack,' I told him. And I will never forget his response. Without the barest hint of braggadocio or conceit, and with what I would describe as deep humility, he said quietly: 'I have a gift, Harry.'"

Now, do YOU read the articles I post, or do YOU just see the line YOU want and assume the whole thing confirms YOUR biases? WEVUS: Courageously spinning embarrasing moments for Obama since January 20, 2009.

Wow; so let me get this straight.  Someone has confidence in their ability and you denounce it?  I'm guessing though that if McPalin would have said the same, you would have guffawed it as an 'experienced man's confidence'.

Guess we'll never know, will we.

Thank God.

I'm not spinning, I'm reading the words on the page:  "Without the barest hint of braggadocio or conceit, and with what I would describe as deep humility, he said quietly: 'I have a gift, Harry.'"

And then you read that in connection with his TOTUS crutch, and what do you get? Disingenuous and phoniness. That "gift" of his really showed today, didn't it? That was my point; irony (Not to mention how damned funny he looked talking/gesturing to TOTUS and that glare to the audience at the very end because they were laughing at him).

He obviously has nothing better to do during the day than:

1. Peruse Freep all day and puff chest when needed, showing yoiur .
2. Daily disrepecting of the POTUS while there.

While I never liked Bush, I never personally disrespected the office and would never do so.  You can disagree with the person on a level of intelligence that makes you at least look somewhat non-partisan.  Gweed is just TNF's version of HanRushBeck.  A heapin' helpin' of hate.  I remember him saying something after the elections to the effect that he would call him out on anything he does wrong.  While I thought he meant policy-wise, I guess teleprompters, whining about how he greets a foreign dignitary and the like are included.

Gweed, get over it man.  Obama won.  The Repubs are washed up for at least two years.  Maybe more unless they can find a vision.

Obama Derangement Syndrome is my prognosis.  Expect 8 years of it from him, unless a miracle happens and the GOP can actually find someone palatable in 2012.  Jindal or Palin I don't think will fit the bill.  What should happen is that the Republicans should detach themselves from the Religious Right in a hurry.  While it served Reagan in 1980, and W to some extent in both his elections, the craziness that is exhibited from that wing of the party is now a detriment to those more moderate than the ultra-right-wing conservatives labeled now as Neocons.

I'm betting Ike and those before him are rolling over in their grave right now to see what has happened to the GOP.

Now wait a second.  You mean to tell me if I were sitting across the table from you at lunch and said: "I have a gift, Wevus" you wouldn't think that just a bit concieted?  No matter how humble I tried to make myself sound.  It's one thing if another heaps that praise on you, but that kind of borders on megalomania when you start telling people: "I have a gift".

I don't know.  I might actually have to hear you say it to me and be able to judge your tone.  And then I might have to judge for myself whether or not you indeed have that gift.   I have to say, if I were sitting across from Obama and he said that to me, I'd have a hard time arguing with him.  In my opinion, he's got the gift in spades.

Self-knowledge is not always conceit.

Edit:  I really have no notion what Obama might have sounded like to Reid.  I find it possible and even probable that he'd say "I have a gift" it without being conceited, but I really can't "prove" anything.  All I was saying was that Guido didn't really read the words on the page.  And that to Reid, it sounded humble.

I think all Presidents have some sort of gift (some are just special) to get elected.  It is like saying that Warren Buffett doesn't have a gift.  Most people don't rise to the top without a gift.

Freudian slip???  ;)

You are right, context and actually hearing it makes a difference.  I think it's impossible to rise to such a level of power without being ego-centric.  Doesn't matter if someone is R, D, Ind, or a brutal dictator.  I think there is a certain amount of self-love that comes with the pursuit of power.
