The company is called HCSC.  I have many friends that still work there and they mention the economy and the impending health care reform as reasons for the layoffs in the memo to all employees.  I have heard from several that the execs at HCSC are very worried about about the possibility that health care could be socialized.  They cannot compete with the government because they do not have to make a profit or do a good job to stay in business.  All my friends that have jobs and the retired people getting pensions are all very worried.  The majority of people do not want socialized health care so my hope is that Congress will listen to them.

You're right.  I used to work with HCSC when I lived in Chicago, and that's the correct name.  HSBC is a bank. 

Since details are still being negotiated and no bill has left committee yet, I doubt these layoffs were in reaction to healthcare reform.  They don't have to compete against the government currently (any more than they ever have), and so there's no reason for change.  Taking preemptive action against an unknown is just stupid business.

Make note that some employees will be offered jobs in Texas, but it was made clear that the economics in the small community they would work in, ......would dictate that pay would be reduced. It is more likely they are using health care changes as a scapegoat for decreasing employee costs. Might as well blame the gubmint.
