Five years ago, Senator Kennedy gets the Massachusetts state legislature to change how Massachusetts' U.S. Senators are replaced from governor appointment to special election, in case Senator Kerry wins the presidency, to prevent then republican governor Romney from naming a republican replacement.

Now that Kennedy is on his death bed, he wants the Massachusetts state legislature to change the senator replacement process back to a governor appointment so current democrat governor Patric can name a replacement immediately in order to vote in health care measures.

Ain't politics great!

I can understand changing laws that don't work, but changing them just so dems or repubs can have some sort of advantage is just plain B S.

And our representatives wonder why they have a 25% approval rating.

He should have given up his seat when he became ill in the first place, and Senators McCain, Obama, Clinton, Dodd, and whomever else should have had to give up their seats when they announced their Presidential campaigns.  There are a lot of important issues going on in this country which should command the full attention and respect of all 100 Senators and 435 Representatives.

From the Democrat Massachusetts legislature in 2004:

"A gubernatorial appointment is undemocratic and only voters should decide on a replacement."

And voters WILL regardless.  In January.  The stipulation on the appointment is that it is a person that will not seek to be elected to the vacancy in the special election.  The concern is having a seat vacant in the Senate.

Now before you rabid repubs start screaming at me, I'm merely repeating the process for Mass.  All he was asking was for an interim replacement until the special election could take place next January.  Other states do the same thing.
