Fun with Zoning!

There are literally hundreds of "uses" listed in the zoning code's index of land uses.  (Another source of amusement is the matrix that shows which uses are allowed in which one of the 23 zoning districts.)

Some uses you see every day ("dentist office" or "restaurant other than drive-thru").  Some are quite fantastic!

Here are some of my favorites:

Armature Rewinding Repair (what is that?)
Armored Car Service
Boiler Works
Cellophane Manufacturing
Dairy Store
Distillation of Bones, Coal, Tar or Wood
Drag Strip (I first pictured drag queens...)
Dry Goods Store
Family Billiard Center ("We've got trouble my friends...")
Fat Rendering
Furrier & Fur Shop
Fur Storage
Glue, Gelatin or Size Manufacturing
Juvenile Delinquency (is this a use by right?)
Lamp Black Manufacturing
Match Manufacturing
Novelty
Nut Store
Phonograph and Record Sales  (Awww...how quaint...)
Pickle, Sausage, Sauerkraut, Vinegar Manufacturing
Plaster of Paris Manufacturing
Reducing Salon
Rendering Plant
Rolling Mill
Shoddy Manufacturing (huh?)
Soda Ash, Caustic Soda & Washing Compound Manufacturing
Sugar Refining
Tallow, Grease, Lard Manufacturing or Refining
Trades Emitting Heavily Objectionable Odor, Heat, Smoke, Noise (Uh...Sinclair?)
Vinegar Manufacturing
Wool Scouring, Hair Manufacturing (ick!)
Yeast Manufacturing

This is all VERY scientific!  :P  This way, we can tell what's allowed and not allowed in any given zoning district.  I like the way "frisbee golf course," and "auto race rack" have the same use unit, and thus, are appropriate for the same zoning districts.  (As I said: it's very scientific!)

The first one is electric motor/generator repair.
