Why the change in event names? "Art Of Barbeque" had been around long enough to develop a name pedigree.

I'm guessing it is no longer under the Arts&Humanities Council

You got it.

Over time, when festivals and charitable organizations become too political, they need to be reborn.

A&H is still planning on holding the Art of BBQ, it will just be smaller and probably at another location.  I think they are shooting for a cooler time of year too.  Hopefully the change will be good for both festivals.  After all, you can never have too much BBQ.

Curious if it might return to Harweldon...

There is clearly room for two different BBQ contests in Tulsa and these are 2 and a half months apart.

I heard the Arts and Humanities just wanted to move back to Harwelden and find a cooler time of year to have their festival. I don't blame them for wanting to scale back a little. In the festival business it is easy to get overwhelmed with good ideas and you can't do everything.

I think the July group is going to put on a great party. I know some of the people (having helped them to recycle). I like the July date better and I love it at OU-Tulsa.

I am afraid the September date is too close to the Greek Festival, the Scottish Games, and the State Fair. Even the BoKCenter Rockin Rib Festival is the weekend before.

That's not all, the July date for AOB was very carefully chosen.  Many professional and Simi-pro teams and their sponsors travel the country, taking time away from their "real jobs" to participate in events and gain awards and recognition leading up to the American Royal.  As the American Royal approaches, teams taper off their participation in regional events to plan for the "Granddaddy" of all competitions in Kansas City on September 30th.

The month of September may be cooler and more enjoyable locally, but it will be harder to get national teams and sponsorships.  If a smaller festival is the goal, this is exactly how to do it.  I fear that many of the teams and sponsors in the new competition will not return for the New AOB.  That's a shame.

Yet one more reason I'm not excited about the Blue Dome Festival moving to the last weekend of September.  I wish event organizers would listen to their patrons.  Oh well, I'll be gone riding MS-150 anyhow.

There again, that may have been the goal.  Perhaps AOB had gotten bigger than originally intended by the Arts & Humanities Council.  I recall when Mayfest got way to big and they scaled it back to more or less the original confines.  Maybe someone could talk to Ken Busby and see if he's willing to share his POV on the split/change.

You know they moved it back to May, right? Like a week after the original announcement?

No, they did a poor job of communicating that, apparently or I slept through the announcement.
