OK ... that's just freaky. He's the most reticent politician I've ever heard.

I think the thing that most tripped my B.S. meter was he didn't have enough money to hire an attorney for his felony charge and got a public defender, but managed to fork over the ten grand for the filing fee. Something doesn't add up here.

I'm not thinking conspiracy, especially since Jim DeMint has one of the safest seats in the country. Because of that, DeMint would have absolutely no incentive to engage in a reckless and convoluted plot of having a plant.

(Of course, a lot of what's been coming out of South Carolina in recent weeks doesn't make much sense. But I digress.)

If Greene is legit, this is yet another example of voters not educating themselves and voting for a guy simply because his name sounded good. It reminds me of a few years ago when some guy whose last name was Bartlett (but not related to the prominent Bartlett family) won a local primary despite the fact he didn't do any campaigning at all.

GOP party plant.  They've done it before in SC.  Only state politically crazier than OK.

Rep. Clyburn blames the tea partiers. I don't know one way or the other. Bottom line, 100,000 people voted for this guy and won the nomination. RW is right though, it is freaky.

Good grief, we've got Forrest Gump running for the Senate.  :o

Too bad he isn't running in Oklahoma.  What a refreshing breath fresh air over our senior Senator!

I don't share my thoughts because I think it will change the minds of people who think differently.  I share my thoughts to show the people who already think like me that they are not alone.

No it's not voters not educating themselves, it's uneducated voters.

This guy should be the poster child for why some sort of civics literacy test should be required before someone is allowed to vote.

Simple questions such as how many States are in the Union?  How many Supreme Court Justices are there?  What are the 3 branches of government?  OK, maybe throw in one trick question.  What form of government do we have, a Democracy or a Republic?

Well, if he is a plant, it's one of the dumbest damned things I've ever seen. DeMint had the election in the bag. There's no reason why he should engage in ratf*cks.

So ... if Greene is a plant, we've got two scenarios:

1) DeMint's guys made one hell of a gamble and did it. Because if they're exposed, the fallout is going to be much, much worse than the meager gains that would have occurred. If true, it'll be labeled as one of the stupidest things to have happened in politics in a long time.

2) A rogue Republican supporter did the plant on his own without DeMint or his staff's knowledge.

But I'm still not sure what's going on here.

The ballot was organized alphabetically according to candidate first name.  His name was at the top.  voters in that area knew nothing about the candidates and simply chose the first name on the ballot.  It happens all the time in local elections.  It's called the "Ballot Order Effect" and has been studied extensivly since the early 90's. The effect is very strong in elections where the constituents know very little about the candidates.

Most electronic voting devices automatically rotate the names randomly to negate this effect, but unfortunately printing random ballots is not cost effective.

Of course George Bush did recently vacation in South Carolina and he could have done something to the ballot boxes?

I don't understand what the problem is.  He got 60% of the vote.  He's unemployed, and SC has an official 11.7% unemployment rate and close to a 19% effective unemployment rate.  He's a veteran, and South Carolina has a very high veteran population.  He's had some legal issues related to sexual crime, which democrats typically classify as unrelated to one's ability to be a leader.  He has a genuine ambition to be representative of his constituency.

I don't understand why the Democrat Party refuses to support Mr. Green.  I hope it's not a racial thing.  Southern Democrats do have a poor track record with that.  ;)

But no, seriously, if the Dems support this cat, there's some creepy stuff on the coast.

That is strange. The guy does deserve our thanks and respect for thirteen years in the military no matter what his discharge was about. As far as holding a political office, it doesn't seem like it would work out too well for him or his state. He does memorize his lines well and when he gets in a pinch, he just keeps repeating them so that shows he has some political future. It looks like the poor guy is being used and doesn't even realize it.
