EDMOND — A metro law firm disputes media reports that it is involved in the halted construction of a controversial billboard near Arcadia's historic Round Barn.

Oklahoma City Mazaheri Law Firm released a statement Tuesday evening in response to the controversy surrounding the billboard, which stands about 25 yards away from the Route 66 landmark.

The billboard is owned by Zoom Media Group, an Oklahoma business which installs and leases billboards in high traffic and high profile locations throughout Oklahoma, according to the statement. The business buys land surrounding the billboards and leases the space on the signs to Oklahoma advertisers.

On Sept. 24, Zoom Media Group bought the land from Expression Church, and informed the church it planned on building a billboard. Zoom Media Group then staked and surveyed the property.

Before buying the land and erecting the billboard, Zoom Media spoke with an employee with the town of Arcadia, according to the statement. The employee purportedly told the company the town has no ordinances regarding building billboards.

On Tuesday, construction began, a process which usually takes one to two days to complete, according to the statement. The construction crew contracted by Zoom Media Group spoke with two individuals associated with the Round Barn concerning use of the excess dirt related to the construction.

In the afternoon, the crew was forced to halt work. The law firm's statement said local residents surrounded the property owned by Zoom Media Group and would not allow the workers to leave.

Arcadia police, who declined comment at the scene, approved the egress of the crew and crane from the property.

"I appreciate the residents of Arcadia and celebrate the beauty of the barn and in no way had the intent of making the erection of a billboard a controversial issue or upset the residents of Arcadia," the unnamed managing member of Zoom Media Group said via the statement. "This was simply a business decision made with the intent of streaming business to Arcadia residents in a society that values driven exposure."

The Secretary of State's website lists Fariborz Mazaheri as the registered agent for Zoom Media. He is the father of the attorney whose ad was supposed to be on the sign.

Interpretation: I hoped we could build it before anyone had a chance to notice or complain.

Interesting part is the Arcadia Historical Society was unaware they didn't own the piece of land this was on in the first place.

"It doesn't even have a sign on it yet and it's the first thing you see," said Sam Gillaspy, president of the Arcadia Historical and Preservation Society. "They bought some land we had no idea we didn't own."

The round barn was donated to the society in 1988. The land where the billboard is being built was bought by Zoom Media for $2,400 on Sept. 24, according to the Oklahoma County Assessor's website. The parcel is less than a tenth of an acre and valued at $300.

Zoom Media Group is owned by Fariborz Mazaheri, according to state records. The business address is listed as 3445 W Memorial, the same as the Mazaheri Law Firm.

Calls to the law firm were not immediately returned Thursday.

Someone make these damned things illegal.

I can't keep shooting them.  They say they're watching me.

Don't feel so paranoid; some of them are watching you...

An advertising campaign in the UK began using automated number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to identify passing vehicles and create personalized advertisements. The motor oil giant Castrol UK Limited yesterday activated a set of five electronic billboards in London that flash an image of the exact type of Castrol-brand motor oil appropriate for the nearest vehicle. "The right oil for your car is: Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 A1," the advertisement reads for eight seconds as a Jaguar with the license plate 1DFL drives past. The roadside digital billboards, seventeen feet wide and eight feet high, are owned by Clear Channel Outdoor. Castrol's campaign added the license scanning technology which ties into the official UK Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) database. The agency provides private registration information to just about any company willing to pay the desired fee.

Rumor has it that Zoom Media is loosing it's footing, and that they are asking their cable TV customers to return their equipment.
Anyone have any friends around Claremore that can confirm or deny?

I read that there's a system that detects the local oscillator frequency in passing cars, and changes the billboard display to match up with the radio station's advertising.  I can see how it would work for conventional AM or FM radio, but the radiated local oscillator signals for satellite receivers are much weaker.
