Westboro protesters come up flat

McALESTER — Members of a Kansas church who protest at military funerals may have found themselves in the wrong town Saturday. Shortly after finishing their protest at the funeral of Army Sgt. Jason James McCluskey of McAlester, a half-dozen protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., headed to their minivan, only to discover that its front and rear passenger-side tires had been slashed.

To make matters worse, as their minivan slowly hobbled away on two flat tires, with a McAlester police car following behind, the protesters were unable to find anyone in town who would repair their vehicle, according to police. The minivan finally pulled over several blocks away in a shopping center parking lot, where AAA was called. A flatbed service truck eventually arrived and loaded up the minivan. Assistant Police Chief Darrell Miller said the minivan was taken to Walmart for repairs.

Even before the protesters discovered their damaged tires, they faced off with a massive crowd of jeering and taunting counter-protesters at Third Street and Washington Avenue, two blocks from the First Baptist Church, where the soldier's funeral was held. Miller estimated that crowd to number nearly 1,000 people, and they not only drowned out the Westboro protesters with jeers, but with raucous chants of "USA, USA."

Westboro members picket military funerals across the country, spreading their message that "God hates America" because it tolerates homosexuality. The church is now embroiled in a case before the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that it has a right to picket the funerals.

It is hard to find a good mechanic on a Saturday, I guess.

If I were them, I would start keeping some extra tires in their minivan.

They made it out of McAlester alive? I would have thought the bodies would have been hidden in one of the ammunition bunkers just outside of town.

I discovered something today. There are in fact people in this world whose misfortune I take pleasure from. I thought I had trained myself better than that. ;)

This is one of the rare cases where I totally approve of vandalism.

I don't share my thoughts because I think it will change the minds of people who think differently.  I share my thoughts to show the people who already think like me that they are not alone.

What is really needed is group activities in Topeka at the seat of this disgusting bunch of maggots.  Do EXACTLY the same to them that they are doing - signs, slogans, chanting, yelling, etc at every "church service" they have.

Good idea. I'm in. Topeka is about fours hours away. We could leave early, protest their morning services, catch lunch and be home by dark.

I have thought the same thing.  Would be nice to give a little back to em.  Would be great if we could get the word out across the country of demenstrations.  But then again, to give them what they have been given would mean a protest just about every day.

Giving attention to these people only serves to feed their illness.

They need to be ignored. . .utterly!

Let them become untouchable, invisible, and lend them no quarter.
