Think we'll get it? My gut is split 50/50. I desperately hope we do get it.

Unfortunately, the seeming inability for our mayor and council to agree on fixing $250 potholes might lead NASA to believe we will have a hard time coming up with the $28mm plane ticket to get it here (haven't they heard we have North America's furthest inland, ocean-going port not even 5-6 miles east of the museum?  ;) ) much less the proper building to store it vertically.  I'm relying on KRMG reports for that last comment.  It appears it's supposed to be displayed vertically or at least the other finalists (rumored to be Kennedy, Johnson, Smithsonian is a slam-dunk) are able to.  Honestly, I'd think you'd want a display similar to the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, Ks. which has a model, where it's displayed horizontally unless the shuttle comes with the main engine and external tanks.

Was having a conversation with a couple of locals up in Seattle and the shuttle came up when they told me that they were hoping to get it there.  Should have seen the look on their face when I said we were trying as well.

Not like our plant didn't build the largest component on the shuttle itself..

I don't know if we really pushed as hard for it as we should have, nor have I seen them put out a convincing proposal.

One thing I would have pushed again and again was not just our location in the center of the country, but the suprisingly large number of people we would be able to serve.  The area we would draw from would be from; Kansas City, Little Rock, OKC, Dallas/Fort Worth, Wichita, and even Denver and St Louis.

Its obvious one of the Shuttles will go to the east coast, one to the west.  Places like Chicago and Houston already have incredible science museums that are big draws. A shuttle would be mere icing on their cake, but I don't think they would pull as many NEW people to see them, to be exposed to science and NASA, as you could get if you put one in the center of the country.  A part of the country that is very underserved, has contributed a lot to the Shuttle and space programs, and that would REALLY appreciate something like the shuttle. The number of new children whose lives  could be touched by something like this, who otherwise wouldnt get the chance to go to "the edges" of the country, would be enormous.

Put it in Houston and you will draw from Dallas/Fort Worth and other parts of Texas.  Florida already has great science and aerospace draws that pull from other parts of the south like Georgia. DC will get a shuttle for the Smithsonian and thus they can easily serve NYC and much of the East Coast. Chicago may get one and could pull as far away as KC and St Louis.  But regardless, your still leaving the middle of the country out.

Again, if you put it in Tulsa, it will be more impactful socially to many children who are otherwise underserved. IMO would lead to greater job creation.  And would draw from a large swath of the country; Tulsa, Kansas City, Dallas, OKC, Wichita, Little Rock, Denver, St Louis.  All of which could just as easily, or far more easily visit Tulsa than Houston (which already has so much) or Chicago (which already has great museums).

I used to run down to Dallas from Tulsa just about once a month in my younger days. A trip to KC isnt that difficult either.  But put a shuttle in Houston or Chicago, its just a bridge to far for most people and your going to be leaving out a even more people further north or south. Put it in the center of the country and create an entire new space/science destination that will touch many many new lives.

Common sense says tulsa would do well to get it - centrally located, large areospace center, good organization working towards it.

But politics says we have no chance.  DC, Florida, and Texas have already gotten billions from NASA and the gravy train will keep rolling.  Too many votes to piss off.  The last shuttle goes to a larger state with a split electorate (read contested).   Add to that oour local political ineptness...

I really hope we get it, but I doubt it.

I will be SHOCKED if we get it.  My prediction is Seattle (where they are already building the expansion), Houston (home of NASA Space Center) and either Ohio (Museum of Flight) or Cape Canaveral (NASA Launch Site).  DC (NASM) will be getting one for sure.

Tulsa Air & Space Museum is not established enough to garner enough attention even though it would be a great location.  I think a local foundation like Kaiser or Helmerich would've had to agree to fund the expansion before being chosen.

I'd be very pleased if TASM was able to get one.  Shocked is a good description as well.  I hope, with the local news coverage, they will not need to use the "you lose" horn sound from Price is Right.

Of course it'd relieve all the area residents who are convinced this will be publicly funded.

New York Daily News is reporting that Enterprise is going to New York when it's moved out of the NASM to make way for Discovery:

That was the one Tulsa was hoping for. Looks like we are out.

Their senators lobbying for it prob helped a considerable amount.

Its rough when one of your senators doesn't believe that space exists :(

Such a let down if this is how it all plays out.
