"That apparently is an understatement, judging from telephone calls and emails The Oklahoman has received recently from inmates, their families and friends. Complaints have come both from within the state prison system and the federal prison at El Reno.
"They expect us to go out and work like men in construction, plumbing, landscape and various other trades and then want us to come 'home' to the extreme heat and misery because we have no A/C. No one can sleep in these conditions," an El Reno federal inmate said in an email. "I know if an individual in the free world were to have his animals in these conditions he would face 'cruelty to animals' charges in a heartbeat."

Serious?  Don't be a criminal D-bag and you don't have to worry about such things.

I'm mildly surprised we don't have A/C in our prisons. It ain't called hot blood for nothing.

Well you know, under the circumstances:

What a bunch of whiners they are.  If they wanna be so "tough" and "gansta" and all that, then they should emulate the Taliban and live in the desert without A/C.  No sympathy!

I don't share my thoughts because I think it will change the minds of people who think differently.  I share my thoughts to show the people who already think like me that they are not alone.

Send them out here and we will put them in tent city at Sheriff Joe's place. I realize the difference between county and state lock ups, but you really don't hear that kind of whining from the inmates in tent city. No sympathy from me. Do the crime you lose a lot of rights and privilages in jail.

I am curious how do you feel about all the animals who must suffer in pens without hope for adoption in this heat. My guess is you'd have more compassion for pets than these "criminals."

How many private prisons accommodate those that have victimized others with cool?

And I'd also surmise from these comments that you are against rehabilitating these "prisoners" before they are back in your neighborhoods.

You live a hard life, you're going to do hard time.  Prison life isn't supposed to be easy, it's supposed to be hard to help create a deterrent effect.  Not that it works, but you get the drift.

That doesn't mean it's the brightest thing in the world to make them live in conditions that cause people to be more prone to being..short.

If you treat them like animals they are likely going to act like animals, now and later when they get out.

No, I don't get your drift. It's not working so keep on doing it?

That's fine guys, we'll just take tens of millions from education budgets to put in new chillers, chilled water systems, cooling towers, and split units for the prisoners.

At some point, you've got to figure out what your spending priorities are and what you can live without or you'd need an effective tax rate of 70% to cover all the wants everyone has out of the public pot of money.

That's a false dichotomy. We could just as easily stop locking so many people up and use that savings to pay for it. Or any number of other things.

Actually cancel "bonding out", reconsider non-violent offender incarceration, ban any tobacco products/junk food, require exercise, get rid of companies making profit on jailing and disallow their ability to lobby.  That might save enough money to pay for the remaining inmates cooling systems.

Conan71

Or we can quit locking up piddly drug users, still not add air conditioning and save a boatload of cash.

We already did raid education budgets to pay for jailer's bonuses and to create a slush fund so they wouldnt have to take furlough days.  Maybe we need to take a much closer look at prison spending in general?
