As Newt Gingrich has surged to the top of the polls in the Republican nomination race, fresh scrutiny is being drawn to his colorful past. While much has been made about the notorious story about his divorce to his first wife Jackie Battley, where Gingrich had her sign the divorce papers while in the hospital undergoing surgery, though the story has been stretched to apocryphal heights (e.g. it wasn't her death bed, the divorce was discussed beforehand), less publicized has been how they first met — like how Battley was Gingrich's high school geometry teacher. Er, what?
Trust but verify

He was 19, she was 26. They were both adults. I don't really find it all that creepy.

I had a few teachers I woulda. . .

I have to commend him on his mojo!

That was when they married. They started dating three years earlier when he was 16.

Yes. It is a little creepy.

If it had been a 23 year old male teacher and a sixteen year old girl, everybody would be screaming for him to be fired and arrested.

Isn't that what all these teacher trials have been about lately?

And in addition to keeping his harlot for 10 years through the 'Clinton times', he said this about his first wife, during the divorce.

'She's not young enough or pretty enough to be the wife of a President. And besides, she has cancer.'

Mr. Family values - right up there with Sarah Palin...

I don't share my thoughts because I think it will change the minds of people who think differently.  I share my thoughts to show the people who already think like me that they are not alone.

Based on what I've read, the person who claims he said that was a disgruntled former aide...Newt denies saying it and I can't imagine that he did. And besides, she DIDN'T have cancer.

His middle wife doesn't speak well of him either.

Hard to tell.  Here is something he did say...

"There's no question at times in my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate."

When explaining how he cheated on both his previous wives.  But he didn't tell his rationalization for dating his high school teacher for a couple years before marrying her at 19.

Palinizing Newt?

Family values is the common thread.  As mentioned.

Hard to say which is worse... Palinizing Newt or Newting Palin.
Both sound appropriate, if mildly salacious....

I find it rather impressive.  Must be swinging a big bat!

I do not support any candidate right now, but going after Newt will be a lot harder than the others. Most of his dirt is old news, and he also is the most tenacious of the candidates out there. The media is also the recipient of much of his wrath--which I enjoy watching.

My ex wife says nothing nice about me, but it doesn't make me a bad person.  Just sayin.

I'm lucky.  My ex-wife still thinks I'm ok.

But then again, I'm not a career politician either.

This fails the half-your-age plus 7 test, therefore it is officially creepy.
