I thought the May Rooms were still there?  Certainly there is an upstairs art galary that calls itself the mayrooms gallery.

Hard to say from pictures, and I haven't gotten out and looked around yet.  One section may still be there, but the vacant lot was a lot of it.

I think you are right.

Also, I wish that building aross the street was still there.  It bothers me that we have gravel ( and grass!) lots in downtown.  From what I'm told though that red brick building is full of lightbulbs, owned by some very old ladies and not for sale for any price.  I assume the gravel lot next door is connected to it.

Are they planning to corner the market with 100W incadescent bulbs?

That's what I was thinking.  They must be economic visionaries.

Is someone still using those things??

And why?

I have original fixtures from the 20's in my house that would look quite goofy with a CFL or LED bulb.  The new iterations are coming down in price and I may give them a shot.

Actually, I think the biggest we use is a 60W.  We have several on dimmers.  Toxic waste due to mercury.  Claims that stated life is over estimated unless you turn it on and leave it on.  On/Off cycles reduce the life significantly is what's claimed. We have a few outdoor flood lights that we tried the florescent conversions (not CFL) that didn't fit in the fixture because the base of the bulb was too big.  I haven't seen that the fire hazard has been eliminated.  None of them are difficult to replace. A simple step stool is sufficient.  I believe I have seen that they are orientation sensitive and must be vertical.  Most of our fixtures are horizontal orientation of the bulb.  I think it was on this forum that several pictures of spontaneously igniting bulbs were shown.

I have been using them exclusively since the early 2000's.  Right side up and upside down.  Indoors and outdoors (upside down).  No fires.  MUCH longer life.  Have had maybe 3 that had "short" lives and I was kind of surprised they lasted less than two years.  Have two outdoor bulbs now that have been going for just a little over 5 years.  I have no fixtures currently that are horizontal.  And no slide dimmers.

Found some '3 way' CFL bulbs about a month ago and put them into two lamps that have done without until now.  Working well so far.  Up to 150 watt equivalent.

There is average 4 mg mercury per CFL bulb.  (Compare to old thermometer that would have about 500 mg.)

Compare that to the more than 50 metric tons of mercury we release every year in this country burning coal...well, that's another one of those cases where the worry is over the mote in one eye versus the beam in another (like some of guido's financial indignation).  275 million CFL bulbs used in 2009.  If all of them released ALL their mercury into a landfill at once, it would be 0.12 metric tons - just for comparison.  And that burning coal thing - well, it could have been MUCH less by now, except for the fact that George Bush fought it tooth and nail throughout his entire term.

And finally - as in, it's about time;

Mark it.  It took less than two pages of thread comments to talk at length about lighting. :)

Seems like this kind of thread diversion is pretty much par for the course, isn't it?

Well, back to the topic - I am looking forward to the Saturday event at the Deco Museum.  And the parade - by whatever name they want to call it!  Hey, it's a parade!!  What's not to like?

Also, the visittulsa.com site with Tulsa Events Calendar shows nothing about the museum opening.  What happened there??

You can get CFLs that don't look all curly and weird. Same for LED bulbs, but the ice cream cone looking LEDs don't spread the light around enough. I'm pretty pleased with the funky-looking Philips LED bulb I have, though. The 60W equivalent is finally down to a moderately reasonable price (presuming it lasts as long as is claimed, anyway). The 75W equivalent is still $40.

I suspect that when looked at closely, the manufacture of LED's will scare people enough to want to do away with them, too.  Silicon processing for the devices going into a bulb would likely be at least equivalent to the "badness coefficient" of 4 mg of mercury used in CFL.  Any way you look at it, lighting is not a neutral event for the planet.
