Kansas tea party illustration draws racism claims

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — A tea party group in Kansas says its depiction of President Barack Obama as a skunk is satire, not racism as the leader of a civil rights group alleges.

Hutchinson-based Patriot Freedom Alliance says on its website that like the president, the skunk is "half black, half white, and almost everything it does stinks."

The Hutchinson News reports local NAACP president Darrell Pope sees no humor in the depiction, which he calls a blatant statement of racism.

Local tea party supporter Chuck Sankey says former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has been the target of worse insults than what's on the website.

Patriot Freedom Alliance meets regularly and has hosted rallies in the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

This post is for guido. He claims that every action of any protestor near any Occupy website defines the entire movement. By his logic every member of the Tea party must now be racist.

Meh, honestly I don't know if it is really racist, though I can understand why it would be seen that way.  He is, racially, half white and half black, and the comparing him to a skunk just makes a reference to that, but doesn't outright say that his racial profile has anything to do with his ability to do anything.  However, even if they did not have the intent to make a racial slur, I can see it being implied by addressing race and then their low opinion of him, thus linking the two.  Really toes the line, but in either case, it is a stupid move on their part.

would Norman Lear get away with this satire today?

Before anyone complains that the pic may be p-shopped onto the car take note. There is a source for these bumper stickers online and they are being purchased.

On the bright side, you know that any racist smile you hear from someone with a bumper sticker like that on their car isn't the inadvertent kind. It's always nice when people are so clear about their inner thoughts.

DB, quit breaking the rules, thread killer.

It appears the maker of the sticker slogan has cut and run rather than stand up with the power of his own convictions.

Don't worry.  There's a market for this stuff, so it's nearly inevitable that someone will step in to fill it.

QuoteInge Marler, Arkansas Tea Party Leader, Makes Racist Joke At Event

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/14/inge-marler-tea-party-arkansas-leader-racist-joke_n_1597334.html?utm_hp_ref=politics

Tea Party leaders in Arkansas are on the defensive after a board member of a Tea Party group in the Ozarks made a racist joke at a rally over the weekend drawing laughs from the audience.

The Baxter Bulletin in north-central Arkansas reported that Inge Marler made the comments at the annual rally of the Ozark Tea Party. The remarks, which suggested that African-Americans are on welfare, were condemned by Tea Party leaders in the state. The Bulletin reported that the condemnation came after they contacted the Tea Party for comment.

The Bulletin reports that Marler, who told the newspaper she would stop using the joke, said the following as an ice-breaker in her speech:

"A black kid asks his mom, 'Mama, what's a democracy?'

"'Well, son, that be when white folks work every day so us po' folks can get all our benefits.'

"'But mama, don't the white folk get mad about that?'

"'They sho do, son. They sho do. And that's called racism.'"

No sense of humor, huh?  C'mon people, lighten up a bit.  Racism has become an overrused excuse for anything somebody doesn't agree with.  To me, being a "n" is purely based on attitude, not race.  It's no secret I don't support Obama, but the list of reasons does not include skin color.  I find the creativity in the bumper sticker funny as he!!.

I imagine you would have the same reaction to the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia in Michigan.  Jim Crow founded and runs the museum.  Guess what?  Jim Crow is black.  Oh, the horrors!

I don't really find it that humorous.  I think that bumper sticker is offensive.
I think it's more a reflection on Arkansas than any groups actual politics.
I also think that if you are looking for racism, you will certainly find it, and this is an excellent example of that.
When attacked by a mob of clowns, always go for the juggler.
