Daddy Long Legs

Has anyone else been raided this year by these bugs ? I don't know if they are Daddy long legs or not. Light yellow colored large wings and long legs bouncing off walls, floors and just generally over populated this year. Our cats love them. I'm not sure why the mass amount.

Not so much today, but they're called crane flies; some people call them mosquito hawks.

During the last week of heat I've seen quite a bit.  I'm guessing the 5 inches of rain followed by the heat was the culprit.

My bet is that you might consider getting a bat house to combat the problem.
Give Wild Birds Unlimited a call, they have some ready-made.

Thanks for that info. I did some looking and found out the old Daddy Long Legs are a type spider. These are probably what you say. Almost as annoying as flys.

Yep, very annoying.  Noticed they weren't so bad today, likely due to the cooler temps.

The ones that I have been seeing seem to have a little bit bigger wings but I'm sure that these are them. Wobbling side to side and not really good fliers.

We always called them mosquito eaters, so with the reason attack of them I decided to see what they were actually called and if they ate mosquitoes.  As said before, they are crane flies, and no, they don't eat mosquitoes.  In fact, they don't eat anything, they have no mouths (and one just flew past while typing) so they die pretty fast.

Yes on the Crane Fly.  They are what MC calls a "winged youwanamus"  I can't think of the technical name, but the larvae grow in the soil much like a cicada.  With the damp spring after drought last summer, apparently, that freed a bunch of larvae at once.  Apparently, like cicada, they do not eat after they mature.  They buzz around a week or two, reproduce like drunken sailors then die.  Our cats have been enjoying them as well.
