Mayfest festival to display art on skyscraper

Mayfest is set for May 17-20 this year and will celebrate its 40th birthday.

This year's Mayfest arts and music festival is adding something big -very big - to its roster. Mayfest is set for May 17-20 this year, and to celebrate its 40th birthday, organizers announced they were bringing a new artform to the state. The 22-story 320 S. Boston Building will morph into a three-dimensional work of moving design. The "move music wonderwall," is a nightly projection project designed by employees of Tulsa-owned GuRuStu and sponsored by Cricket Communications.

"This is done heavily in Europe," said Stuart McDaniel of GuRuStu during a Tuesday morning press conference. The group also created last year's mobile app and this year's revamped festival website, he said. Artists, with help of massive projectors, will use the existing structure to create illusions that the building is growing, moving, expanding, folding and more, much like a brick-and-mortar Transformer, McDaniel said. The projections will show between free headlining music concerts all three nights, including Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey on May 17, Hayes Carll on May 18 and J.D. McPherson on May 19.

Ken Busby, festival board president, also announced that nationally known artist Otto Duecker returns to design his first Mayfest poster since 1993. The original painting used in the poster will be unveiled 5:30 p.m. April 25 at OSU-Tulsa.

To celebrate four decades, official art and memorabilia from every year will be on display in the Vintage Mayfest Gallery, May 4-30 in the lobby of the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. Mayfest is a free festival that includes fine arts, food, crafts, four stages of performing artists and a children's "KidZone" for hands-on art and activities. Mayfest also features five indoor art galleries.

This is not a cheap project. The projector has to be rented and flown in. Dallas has done this once, otherwise it hasn't been done anywhere near here. The idea is that there will be a "show" that runs between band performances as well as smaller vignettes that run between shows. 320 S Boston is good for this project as they have white blinds on the windows and it removes the need for scrims on the windows.

Not included in the announcement is Mayquest, a scavenger hunt during the week of Mayfest with 4 daily prizes and a $1,500 cash grand prize.
