President Obama awarded activist Dolores Huerta with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House on the on Tuesday.

In his address, the president mentioned that Huerta was responsible for coining his "Yes We Can" slogan.

Huerta is shares an Honorary Chair of the Democratic Socialists of America with Francis Fox Privin, Gloria Steinem, and Cornel West.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is the largest socialist organization in the United States, and the principal U.S. affiliate of the Socialist International. DSA's members are building progressive movements for social change while establishing an openly socialist presence in American communities and politics.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is currently the supreme civilian decoration awarded by our government.

There were other recipients that day, Bob Dylan, the musician, Toni Morrison, the novelist and Nobel laureate; Madeleine K. Albright, the former Secretary of State; John Paul Stevens, the former Supreme Court Justice; John Glenn, the astronaut and former Senator; and the Israeli president Shimon Peres.

Some of the media, such as the New York Times opted to leave Huerta's name out of their reports of the event.  I can't imagine why:

What a fabulous achievement.

I know that you are programmed to believe that Socialism = Communism = Utter Evil but you might want to look up what the woman has done  in her life before bashing the award.

Where did I bash the award, or the woman?

Hypersensitivity.  It's a stock item on all factory-delivered liberals, Gas.

Kind of like insensitivity is the stock item on all factory-delivered conservatives.

Need to remind the Trump wannabe's here, Socialism is not illegal in America. We've been practicing elements of it for a couple hundred years. It put you through school.

What was the point of the post?

It just represents some interesting political news.

I had no idea that's where "Yes we can" came from.  Going back further, you find that the president actually first adopted in in 2004 for his senate bid, and it continues to be used as the slogan for the International Socialist Organization.

As for Mrs. Hureta, she has certainly left her mark on history and inspired many people.  I'm sure most progressives would agree that her contributions to society merit such an honor, and I'm sure that they can take pride in the fact that this president was brave enough to honor her even though some media outlets chose to downplay the connection.  Furthermore, it shows a great deal of courage on the president's part to acknowledge the impact her politics has on his own, by sharing the slogan of her movement and other similar movements.

Socialists typically get a bad rap, and most politicians who consider themselves devoted to preservation of our capitalist economy are quick to shy away from presenting any close ties to socialist groups.  This move by the president shows a great deal of courage in acknowledging the contribution that socialism has made in forming his own political philosophy.  It also shows a great deal of cowardice on the part of the New York Times in choosing to shield the president from scrutiny by failing to mention Mrs. Hureta.  I'm sure they have his better interests at heart, but if he is fearless in celebrating Mrs. Hureta's impact on society than so should they be.

Great.  Glad to see you're doing whatever it is you're doing.

Keep it up.

Rootin' for you.

Actually no, we go to insensitivity training camps.

"Not a bigger giant in the history of American Music" POTUS OBAMA

Gifted songwriter and musician.  Like Carlos Santana, he would have done well to employ other vocalists though.  With the exception of a few songs, his voice annoys me.

Choose to not listen then. His voice serves a minor role to his art.

I am always amazed when someone goes,"I love that song" only to be reminded by me that Bob wrote it:

I have seen Bob dozens of times and it always hits me that what I am experiencing at the time is performance art. Bob never paints the same tune live.

Does Carlos sing?

I am so angry at Obama for giving that woman an award for the slogan "yes, we can."

The true recognition of that phrase should be given to "Bob the Builder."

Socialism is not illegal in America.

That's the understatement of the year. Not only is it not illegal, we subsidize large corporations to the tune of nearly a trillion dollars a year. Apparently socialism is OK if the beneficiaries already have money.
