Saw this yesterday, just getting back to it. I only hope they did it for the right reasons, not because of some bs pressure from outsiders.

The other woman admitted, Darla Moore, was quoted a few years back when asked about becoming the first woman member "I'm as progressive as they come. But some things ought not to be messed with."

What are the right reasons and what would you consider pressure from outsiders?

The right reasons would be the membership agreed that they should have women as members because they wanted women as members. Not because it would appease the constant drumbeats of the media and women's group saying its unfair. It's a private club, they can do what they want.

So it's questioned whether the membership voted to allow women?

Maybe these women are good golfers and have friends who wanted them as members of the club. Why is everything a conspiracy?

So it's BS when a racist and sexist group is called out for being racist and sexist? This "club" receives major funding from lots of large corporations that do business with women so it's not exactly like your local friendly neighborhood KKK group that doesn't admit black members for some reason. Though I am guess more than a couple of members of Augusta were and probably still are Clan types. Clifford Roberts, one of the founders of the club and the longtime Masters chairman was quoted as saying "As long as I'm alive all the golfers will be white and all the caddies will be black." That's right, the caddies were required be black. Gotta keep them colored in their place right? No problems there? I'm sure it never even crossed his narrow little mind that a golfer might be a woman.

Now while he died and hopefully went to hell for being a racist a$$hole in 1977 the club waited until 1990 to admit it's first black man. 1990! No black player ever played in The Masters until 1975 and black caddies were required until 1982. In 1982 we had Space Shuttles and personal computers but Augusta still had all black caddies. The first black member was only admitted as the PGA started banning exclusively white clubs from hosting tournaments in 1990. And this "club" has now waited until 2012 to admit the first female members. Would that have anything to do with the fact that one of the three main sponsors of The Masters now has a female CEO?

The Masters, A racist and sexist tradition unlike any other. Well, sadly it's not really unlike any other. That is what is really BS, not that they would feel some pressure to join the 20th century now that most of the rest of us are in the 21st.

Not to forget, "they" lengthened the course to "Tiger proof" it. "They" would say it was due to "new technology of equipment", but having witnessed Tiger's amazing first win there "they" no doubt thought he was going to totally dominate for ten years and something had to be done to level the playing field. In the process, the quality of their great tournament has gone south.

Did you know that Tulsa had the greatest % of members at Augusta on a per capita basis than any city in America from 1970-1985? (that's a guess...naturally, these statistics are unavailable)

I just wonder if they'll establish red tees for women.....doubtful.

First thing, this is a private golf club, and no matter how important it thinks it is, it can by no way effect the outcomes of people lives like say a job or something.

Second, as long as we have the first amendment I feel that like minded people should be able to gather in freedom for whatever hair brained reason they like.

Lastly, I expect to hear riveting diatribes about how the black panthers and hispanic caucuses are just a bunch of racists and need to fast forward into present day.

Augusta is not about race or women or golf or any of those type of petty things (maybe at one time it was - I won't comment on that - but not now...).  It is about business, and it looks like those two would be very near the top of my list of women to allow to join any club with business as it's main focus.  Both would bring incredible contacts, knowledge, business acumen, and value that would be far above and beyond any reason to not allow women (whatever that may be...)

I don't share my thoughts because I think it will change the minds of people who think differently.  I share my thoughts to show the people who already think like me that they are not alone.

Unfortunately, your posts also seem to imply that the rest of us should not have the freedom to criticize them for their choice to act in a sexist and sometimes racist manner.

Augusta is very much about golf.  Many private clubs of that stature don't even allow the discussion of business on the club grounds.  Sure it can be discussed in general terms but you aren't allowed to bring contracts, documents, etc or have true business meetings.

They do a little bit of golf.....

The business is all done there - the rest of that stuff is just the details the underlings finish up amongst themselves.

Said nothing of the kind. I was actually pretty well redressed for expressing the opinion of my friend and of myself. Stop throwing out the straw men.

Funny thing is, is that Augusta changed their policy which many have been pressuring them too, and what do they get. They get crucified for having had the policy in which they just changed. What is it going to take to make people happy?
