No TeXting!

Last night there was another story on the news about the loss of a life from someone texting while driving. This idea came into my head faster than I could have thought about it. I want to ask you guy's what you think and how to go about getting this implemented.

A company needs to invent a software that all of the Cell phone manufactuers and Cell phone carriers will either incorperate into new phones or add to a critical update to current phones.

The software will detect when a cell phone is moving at 10 miles per hour and disable the phones texting ability.
You will still be able to walk and text. Just not drive and text.
I know that there has got to be some way to make this happen. And I do not know who I would have to contact with this idea to see if there would be any interest. So what say you TNF?

GPS has this built in so I am sure it wouldn't be too hard, its just the whole "you can tell me when to use common sense" thing that bugs me...I think I am pretty good at policing my own behavior..

Perhaps if we removed all warning labels from everything it would help eliminate the problem all together naturally that this world has....survival of the smartest would be my solution...

Because before texting came around, no one was distracted by talking on a phone while driving, either.

I agree. But talking on the phone does not take your eyes off the road like texting.

There are obviously significant numbers of drivers that are not capable of policing their own behavior.

Unfortunately, the not so smart take out those who don't deserve to be injured or killed. 

I see texting as very similar to drunk driving.  Most people shouldn't even talk on the phone while driving, especially with hand held phones.

I've seen too many drivers with a phone to their ear going slow on the expressway causing disruptions in traffic flow, wandering a bit, having difficulties going around a intersection corner, not starting to move at a green light even after a reasonable time to verify there are not red light runners......

Generally, they think they are the only driver on the road.  It is obvious that they are not paying attention.

Your eyes may be looking at the road, but there's a hell of a lot more involved in driving besides just your eyes.  You need to be concentrating on the road, paying attention to things going on, and then reacting appropriately.  Speeding up, slowing down, changing lanes, etc.  Driving is a more active process than just "push gas and go forward".

If the person doesn't have a hands-free set, they're driving without a hand on the wheel, or are trying to balance that phone on their shoulder.  Very bad for reaction time or just plain being able to control the car.  

If they have a hands free set, it's generally one of two types - a bud directly in the ear or a speakerphone.  I would wager that most people, especially around these parts, aren't driving a car that is new enough to have one built into the stereo system, or that didn't want to pay the extra overhead.  They'll have an ear bud in, and maybe even holding the microphone closer to their mouth if it's on a cord.

I do and it still proves distracting.  I don't feel as though I can be as attentive while talking on a speaker phone in my car.

I'm against texting and driving.  Do I want my phone to be unable to text at a certain speed?  No.  I feel that's an overstep.  Should it be illegal to text and drive?  IMO, yes.
