Fluoride may not be the best thing for our water

A new Harvard study is showing a correlation between high fluoride levels and low IQ levels in children.  We've discussed the contents of our water system before, but this gives a different view on things.

Not sure that headline is accurate. The story says that Harvard didn't actually do a study, they simply analyzed the results of other studies and concluded that those studies showed a correlation. There is a difference. And I would really like to know how many ppm of flouride we add to Tulsa water and how much is in bottled water.

Could sure 'splain a lot.

Most municipalities I have talked with in the far distant past said about 0.5 mg/L  (IIRC, that is .5 ppm).  Never did ask Tulsa people at the time.  .5 to 1 seems to be a popular range.  Bottled water, being unregulated and unmonitored is unknown.

Anyone out there brush their teeth?  Or have kids that brush their teeth?  Vast majority of toothpastes range from 1 to about 1.5.  They all recommend a pea sized drop...and advertise showing a brush covered with an inch or two of paste.... 3 times a day...!!??  THAT is where your overdose is coming from - if it is happening - not the water!  Fluoride is one of the top ten beneficial things we have done for public health in this country.  It is a testament to that success with hundreds of millions of people that now we can be concerned about hundreds of people who might be affected by fluoridated water...if that many.

Europe is touted as a shining example of non-fluoridated water...until anyone with half a brain and a little bit of google time discovers that they instead add it to table salt.  To prevent tooth decay.

Like Iodide is added to salt to prevent goiter.  Anyone ever see someone with goiter?  It will make you run home and eat a spoonful of salt!

Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous communist plot we have ever had to face?

It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual, and certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard core commie works.

Have you never wondered why I drink only distilled water, or rain water, and only pure grain alcohol?

Brushing your teeth is not the same as drinking water infused with it.  When you brush your teeth, you spit it out, and only consume a small portion of it.  And you're supposed to drink enough water in a day that would make up for the difference in ppm even if you swallowed the whole toothbrush full of toothpaste like they show in the commercials.

I'm not screaming conspiracy, or that it is necessarily making all of our kids stupid (our underfunded education system in this state does a good enough job of that for us), I'm just saying it is something to think about and take into consideration.  We still don't know all of the facts surrounding fluoride.

That's kind of what I was getting at...we took care of the really BIG problem of everyone losing their teeth by age 25, so now have the luxury to sit back and see what 2nd order effects are occurring.

Do you have kids?  (I'm guessing no...)  Given the sweet treat the toothpaste is, I had to watch mine like a hawk to make sure they did not use more than pea-sized and make sure they spit it out.  Sweet in your mouth seems to trigger one of those automatic reflexes that makes kids swallow the stuff...

The hysteria on fluoride is very much like the hysteria surrounding vaccinations.  Way too many people are falling into "nonsense science" mode without really understanding what they are "knee-jerk" reacting to!  I knew 3 friends when I was a kid who had polio...I have worked with two more and have a nephew that had it as kids.  I bet most here have never known anyone who had it.  And certainly no one under 50 has had it, unless they went abroad to get it, or had totally stupid parents who did not get them vaccinated.  Like the Taliban...those pillars of civic responsibility in Pakistan.

'Till ya live in that world, ya just can't imagine or really appreciate how good this time is....

Oh, and one more thing - fluoride is thought to possibly react with aluminum in an adverse way related to Alzheimer's.  And what does pop come in?  Aluminum cans.  Made with fluoridated water.  Except the can is lined with plastic...containing what?  Oh, yeah...BPA.  Geez, we just can't catch a break!!  We're ALL gonna die....!!!!

I would rather be stinking rich so I could afford anything needed relative to all health issues.

Well, you must know by now that the toothbrush was invented in Arkansas...otherwise, it would be called a "teethbrush"....

Sorry...just couldn't help it.

Yes, I have kids.  No, they don't (and haven't) gone nuts on swallowing toothpaste.  And as stated before, even if they did swallow amounts similar to what is on tv commercials, it still wouldn't be as much as would be in the recommended 8 - 12 glasses of water a day.

I'm not sure why you are equating what I have said with hysteria.  All I'm saying is it is worth looking into the affects of the use of such things. Knowledge is a good thing.

I'm not equating your comments to hysteria...sorry that is came off that way....just using your comment as doorway to note the hysteria out in the rest of the world that has been building over many years.  I absolutely agree we should be studying it IN DEPTH!!  I particularly believe we should be looking at aluminum as it relates to Alzheimer's - and all the different chemical permutations we do with the various other items that regularly come in contact - like Fluoride.  I suspect it will be like asbestos and smoking - decades of denial by the big industries involved, with ultimate indications that the problems are real and all pervasive.  (Then the big industries involved will continue to deny, or will look back and say, "...if only we had known, we would have done something sooner...."  to show their concern, of course.

Now, now... forcing these industries to pay for disposal of their industrial waste (instead of selling it to municipalities) would be anti-job growth.
