To Conan71 and other green chile fanatics. Thought I'd restart a topic and share a recent discovery. Has anyone else discovered any new sources for green chile in Tulsa?

Restaurants:  Chuy's has two flavors of Green Chile. You can get samples to try before you order.  Downside - very crowded!

Stores:  Recently I found 24 oz bags of frozen hot New Mexico green chile at Sprouts at 101st and Memorial. (< $6)  Not sure about 41st and Harvard.  Previously I found 16 oz tubs of Bueno frozen green chile at Reasor's in Jenks.  (not sure if all Reasor's have it).

We've gotten the tubs at Reasor's in mid-town in the past.  We still have bags upon bags from last summer's haul coming home from Leadville in August so I doubt we'll need the tubs for a while yet.  I'll let my wife know about Sprouts as well, she frequents the 41st St. store for produce a couple of times a week.  Freshest around and best prices.  Don't know how they do it.  I'd think they would really be putting the hurt on the 41st & Peoria Whole Paycheck.

Does the Chuy's green have tomatillo in it, or is it authentic New Mexican?  Might be worth a try.

If you have not been there, Green Chile Kitchen in Yukon is worth the drive.  Pretty authentic NM cuisine and great service every time I've been there.

Sprouts has great deals on meat too.  Every time they do their $2.99 ribs I get 4 racks and stick em in the deep freeze. Good size with nice straight bones.

I'll have MC watch for those.  Now that I've added a beer fridge in the garage, I have more deep storage as well.

I work with nmoky, he would never call anything with tomatillo in it "Green Chile".

I also occasionally tease him about misspelling Okie.

I like Chuys, and the green chile there, but you would think the food was free from the crowds.

Chile is a religion in N. Mex., as you know. To call tomatillo salsa "green chile" is much more than merely absurdly wrong. I like tomatillo salsa, but it's not green chile. The sly use of the term "chile verde" to refer to tomatillo salsa is revolting.

BTW, I tried the place in Yukon ("Green Chile Kitchen"?) and liked it very much. I mourned the loss of the Border Crossing restaurant in Norman, but the place in Yukon was much better. The only problem was that my New Mexico-raised wife thought it was too spicy. She's really from Ohio, which explains everything. Could a genuine New Mexican restaurant make it in Tulsa?

Ever had a green chile cheeseburger in San Antonio, New Mexico? The Buckhorn or the Owl, take your pick.

No.  There used to be a couple of places in Albuquerque that were pretty good...can't remember either of the names, but both local - had a friend who would take me there when visiting.  Pretty authentic to me....but not like anything I have seen around here, and probably would be an acquired taste.

Barrio Cafe in terminal 4 of Phoenix airport!!  Yum!!  Go figure - how did they ever get a decent restaurant in an airport??  The end must be near.

I don't share my thoughts because I think it will change the minds of people who think differently.  I share my thoughts to show the people who already think like me that they are not alone.

I have not been to San Antonio, NM before.  Was that one of the places featured by Anthony Bourdain or Guy Fieri?  Our travels generally keep us north of I-40 in NM.  We might have to make a point to head down that way next time we travel west.

We've got a pretty good list of places we think are "musts" when we are in the area:

El Matador in Raton-  Dumpy dated place, but really good red and green.  Their version of a green chile burger is a large sopapilla smothered with ground beef, cheese, and green chile sauce.

Orlando's in Taos- Everything is good here.  Most memorable/innovative item on the menu is the avocado pie.

Eske's Brew Pub in Taos- Wanda's green chile stew.  That's what inspired my wife to start making her own GCS and green sauce.

The Shed in Santa Fe- Possibly the best red sauce I've ever had, washes down good with a Santa Fe nut brown ale.

High Country in Chama- Chile smothered chicken fried steak.  Need I say more?

Honorable mentions:

Rabbit ear cafe Clayton, NM
Golden Burro Leadville, Co (good breakfast burritos with green sauce)
The green chile burger at Wolf Creek ski resort is nothing more than a beef patty with cheese and fresh green chile slices on it, but it's probably the atmosphere that makes it taste so good.

Cafe Ole' is or was supposed to be Santa Fe cuisine, but they commit the sin of tomatillos in their green sauce and their red sauce is nothing to be proud of.  I don't know if there are that many people like us who give a rip about New Mexican peppers and NM-style cuisine in Tulsa that it would be a draw based on it being "New Mexican".  However, if the food is really good it would obviously be a draw all by itself.  It would be great if the Green Chile Kitchen owners would consider building one in Tulsa.

Appears that the topic has shifted to NM...

I agree with Conan71 on the Shed in Santa Fe. Their green chile is also great, but extremely hot!!!  If they open at 5:30pm, go at 5:00 and put your name on the list.

Personally the green chile at Orlando's in Taos left me unimpressed. I did enjoy the green chile enchiladas at Michaels Kitchen.  Also, I enjoy Pizza Out Back, 1/2 mi N of the Kachina (appears pricey, but a medium usually feeds 4).

Wolf Creek Green Chile Cheese Burger - I especially liked those I got at the base of the Alberta Lift when that burger shack is open (the roasted green chile was good [not canned]).  (can be iffy if the cook is new)  Laid back atmosphere is very different from the crowded base lodge.  Of course, when the sun is shining and you've just skied your 5th run in 12"+ of untracked powder, most anything will probably taste good!

Tried Sadie's in Albuquerque for the first time last month.  Awesome red chile - some of the best I've ever had.  My daughter had the brisket stuffed sopapilla. Huge!  So much beef that we made three sandwiches from the left overs!  Their "green chile" was a red sauce with green chile in it.  While I may have be OK with it in Tulsa, it was disappointing for NM.  Fortunately I asked for samples of their chile before ordering.

Southern NM:
Las Cruces: Nellie's is a MUST DO at 6th and Hadley just off S valley drive.  Their green chile plate is great. So is their red chile plate. Their red and green enchilada sauces are also good.  They have a combo plate with all four.  Chile Rellenos are also good.  Slogan: "Chile With An Attitude!"   Small family run place.  Open Tue-Sat 8:00am-2:00pm. Take cash.  Afterwards, drive 1 mi S on S Valley Drive to Caliches frozen custard to quench the fire.

Alamogordo: Margos (in front of Wal-Mart)  Good green chile enchiladas.  They'd declined for awhile around 2006, but they are back! I was there last month. Too hot for my wife, but just right for me! (about med hot)

Alamogordo: Pancake and Waffle Shoppe, next door to the Denny's that they drove out of business.  Great Huevos Rancheros with green chile sauce.  While the sauce is not that hot, it is unusually flavorful!  Best hash browns I've ever had! Nice and  crisp!

A friend has a saying about chile in New Mexico - Green down south, Red up north.

Conan71 - I take it you like to ski. Check out the Tulsa Ski Club  www.tulsaskiclub.com.  Skiers Night Out the 3rd Thur of every month 5:30 to 7:30 is a great time to meet people in the club. Next time is May 22, Baker Street Pub. We need novices and good skiers, of all ages, to race with us next Jan at Crested Butte to get our title back from Kansas City! Novices earn us extra points!

We love to ski!  I wasn't sure Tulsa Ski Club still existed.  I did my first trip with them to Snowmass in 1976 with my mother.  I would imagine there are probably some people in the club I cycle with.  I'll have to look at the calendar and see what we have on the 22nd.  I've been a member of FOAM for several months now and still have not managed to get to one of their meetings.  (Red Arrow tends to remind me).
