The choice for the Tulsa City Council seat in District 7 has three candidates. One stands out: Anna America.
She is opposed by incumbent Arianna Moore and newcomer Eric Turley.

Incumbents usually have a step up on challengers. They have had the privilege of learning the ropes and gaining popularity in their district. Moore, 27, is a nice person. She has good intentions. But, frankly, she has been the councilor who was missing in action the past two years. She rarely speaks up in meetings. Her district suffered from the inadequate representation, especially in getting its street needs addressed. She says she has been listening and learning, but it was a learning curve that she couldn't hit. Turley is new to politics. He is a nice man with good intentions and some good ideas. We hope that he continues to be active in Tulsa politics after this election.

But America has more to offer.

She has been involved in the community most of her life. She has been executive director of the nonprofit Up With Trees, she has been a youth soccer coach, a Girl Scout leader and PTA officer. Among other credits too numerous to mention, she was involved in the Tulsa Parks Comprehensive Plan, the 11th Street Corridor Task Force, and she was a strong member of the Tulsa School Board. In that post she helped make tough, but fair, decisions during the controversial Project Schoolhouse initiative, which closed some Tulsa public schools.

She undoubtedly will be accused of being tied too closely with former Mayor Kathy Taylor. America was a top aide in Taylor's unsuccessful campaign against Mayor Dewey Bartlett. We think she is her own woman with a deep desire to improve this city and move it forward. America knows her stuff. She is a tireless worker who understands the needs of her district.

District 7 covers a good deal of south and east Tulsa. Its most important asset is the corridor from Memorial Drive to Mingo Road on 71st Street and points along Memorial that are so vital to the city.

To keep that area vibrant, the district needs what it has been missing for two years: a councilor who will speak up and fight for her constituents.

Anna America is the voice that District 7 needs on the City Council.
Power is nothing till you use it.

Anna America is married to the Tulsa World?

Our marriage laws are getting more liberal.

When you marry Miss America you get a runner-up wife just in case the first one can't fulfill her duties.

I can't wait to pick her.
