Agreed.  Mine took a relatively easy blow a couple of years ago and that's what happened to mine.  Geek Rescue was able to recover my entire hard drive.  I think it was $300-$400.  Took a couple of days, but well worth the time and $$$.

Artist, did you talk to Geek Rescue yet?

Macs have better protection in their hard drives than your average Windows box, they have a drop sensor that disengages the heads from the platter. Some high end and business class Windows machines have this protection, but not many. It would have to be quite a drop to damage the drive.

I wouldn't go to Best Buy, go to the Apple Store.

Geek Rescue is not the same as Geek Squad at Best Buy.  Locally owned by Chris Finnerty and Damon DoRemus.  Great service, I've used them personally and our company uses them as well.

Ah, ok good.

Like Grizzel said, I wouldn't trust Best Buy with much of anything.

Me Neither. I think most of them just stepped up from: "Would you like fries with that today?"

Just changed the wording to "would you like the extended warranty with that today?"

I love it when they try to tell people how much better the picture they will get with those Monster brand gold tipped $100 HDMI cables than cheap $6 Amazon cables. I really think the Best Buy employees are dumb enough to believe the crap they are saying.

Very good friend of mine worked for them as a tech manager for several years.  They do good work.  They also spend the time and money to keep their technicians certified in the latest technologies and are pretty picky when it comes to hiring.

I had two recommendations at work: Wholesale Computers and Mega Watts. I know nothing about either of them.

How does one dispose of an old PC (and CRT monitor) safely and with sensitivity to the environement?

I bet RM knows this; he's currently in Nawlins' however.  You might call MET and see if they can help?

We accept all electronic waste at two of our recycle centers. Take it to our downtown center at 11th and Cincinnati or to our location at 35th and Sheridan.

RM, I have another question as it relates to specialized materials.  Since I've gotten back into RC as a hobby, I may at some point need to dispose of Lithium Polymer batteries.  Does MET takes those also, and if not, can you suggest a place?  They're a different animal than just regular Lithium or NiMH batteries as they can be a fire hazard in some instances.

Thanks.

Goodwill and Best Buy take old computers and CRTs for recycling also.

Apple Store does seem like it would be the wiser choice.  I will hunt for my passport and make a trip out south.  Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Absolutely no help for the present situation, but going forward, there are some things to do regularly and religiously - make them an article of faith for the business of The Artist!!!

Backup, backup, backup!!!  It's not optional, as you are finding out so painfully!  The link shows a fairly decent starting place.  Buy two of the drives.  Make a data folder in each.  If you are using Windows, you hopefully have everything in the My Documents section.  If a Mac, I don't know, but there must be folders there, too.  Just re-read your post and you have Mac....everything here still applies - Scooter Software is OS 10.1 and up.

Make full copies of everything you value onto each one.  Keep them in SEPARATE LOCATIONS!!!  There are a lot of disk rotations schemes out there for data management - Google is your friend.

These are only 1 Tera-byte each, but that can store quite a bit.  If need more, there are 2 TB portables just like this (Toshiba Canvio) and even 3 TB desktop external.  I have a set for data/development and another for multimedia (4 drives total).  Plus a handful of 64GB thumb drives for critical "carry around with me" data, but that might be too much for your setup.  Make sure your next computer has USB 3.0!!  You will love it.  These work with USB 2.0 just fine, but are slower.

To avoid having to copy everything every time you want to back up, Win has backup capability, but I just use a product called Beyond Compare by Scooter software.  I use it quite a bit in my software development and it is very easy to just use it for backup, too.

Just found this - 64 GB was the largest I use so far, but this is the next purchase - probably tonight!!!
