Tulsa - More and more schools are dressing students in uniforms. And, we've learned of a plan that could change your child's dress code. Several Tulsa Public Schools have adopted uniform policies. And, soon EVERY middle school could have one. We sent NewsChannel 8 Education Reporter Kim Jackson to one middle school to check it out.

Middle school is one of the most difficult age groups. Kids are going through hormonal changes, peer pressure is high and they have more suspensions than anyone else. Some think uniforms could help them cope.

Two years ago, students at Byrd Middle School surprised everyone when several showed up in pink -- a gang color. Dr. Rashaun Ashanti-Alexander faded the colors, and the problems when he started a uniform program seven years ago at Madison.

"Students acting out, not great as it used to be, fighting drastic drop in those issues with children."

Now, middle school principals are considering uniforms at every middle school. And, students think it's a good idea.

"Sometimes it separates us from the gang colors," says Shaunice.

"Wearing uniforms is fun," adds Keymiya Cowans. "Because you don't have to worry about picking clothes out at night."

Sixth graders wear green shirts. Seventh graders wear maroon. With a new policy, each school would pick its own uniform.

"Students moving from one school to another won't have to think about it," says Ashanti-Alexander. "All schools will have a uniform dress code. You don't have to look at one school and compare it with others who are not."

They would all be similar, like the uniforms themselves, taking the focus off fashion and putting it back on the books.

Right now, the principals are just discussing the plans for uniforms. They could take it before the school board soon. And, the plan for uniforms could be in place by next school year.
