Trendy touch: Small plate: Brookside due new dining concept

Undaunted by the closing of one of his previous culinary ventures, local restaurant entrepreneur Greg Hughes is ready to offer Tulsans a taste of a dining trend that's getting rave reviews in other cities.

The man behind the successful In the Raw sushi houses and the former En Fuego Mexican eatery will soon open his version of a new restaurant concept serving smaller portions of food in a relaxed atmosphere that encourages guests to settle back on sofas and even comfy, pillow-scattered beds.

Compi -- pronounced com-pay and meaning "cheers" in Japanese -- is patterned after a new generation of "small-plate" restaurants and cocktail lounges often found in the lobbies of New York City and Los Angeles hotels, Hughes said.

And diners already fond of his two sushi restaurants will find some of the same at Compi.

"We're going to open up a spinoff of In the Raw; what we are calling an adult lounge for people age 25 to 70," Hughes said.

Compi -- in the former Ford's Filling Station site at 3301 S. Peoria Ave. -- will feature 30 small-plate selections, although Hughes says it's not a tapas bar. Instead of only cuisine from Spain, it will offer some familiar
foods. Two-thirds of the menu will be from In the Raw and the remaining selections will be new offerings from executive chef Cody Stell, who created the dishes at both En Fuego and In the Raw.

Intrigued diners won't have to wait long to check it out -- Hughes, who was a partner in Ford's, is planning to open Compi soon.

"We're shooting for the end of September," he said.
