Old 8MM movies

Is there some way to transfer 8MM movies to DVD?

My father used to enjoy taking movies of us while growing up, but once we got into video cameras, the old movies were stashed away and forgotten.  Since he passed away we've been wanting to do something with those movies but don't know where to begin.

Anyone has experience with something like this?
