HARRISBURG, Pa. That church group from Kansas that shows up to picket military funerals has decided not to demonstrate at the funerals of the five Amish girls who were shot this week in Pennsylvania.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church routinely picket military funerals, saying American servicemen and women are dying overseas because God is angry that the U-S tolerates homosexuals.

And the church, in a statement on its Web site, blames Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell for the five school shooting deaths this week -- because of comments Rendell made about the Kansas church group on T-V several months ago. Rendell says, "They're insane."

But now, it says a representative of the church will appear on the nationally-syndicated Mike Gallagher radio talk show, in exchange for dropping the planned demonstration at the Amish funerals.

In June, Rendell signed legislation aimed at restricting the church group's picketing, by making it illegal to demonstrate within 500 feet of a funeral or memorial service.

Is this good or bad?  Will this lead to further deals to allow Westboro airtime in exchange for them not protesting?

I actually agree with you here.  Would we give air time to Osama Bin Laden if they kidnapped a serviceman and he was using that as blackmail to get air time?  I doubt it.  Everyone has the right to free speech, but do we all have the right to free access to media to speak?  Probably not.

I saw the interview on H&C last night and both Hannity and Colmes were deservingly VERY angry and condemning of the woman they sent to speak for them.  It was disgusting but a good object lesson for those who saw it as to what evil fundamentalism truly looks like.

I think we need to take them and their church (made up of family members), put them in the middle of the Ark. River and build our three islands. (on top of them of course)

They are warped and there is no fixing them. Such hate and in the name of Jesus....Oh My!

They may have been on Fox News, but Sean Hannity did pretty well to make the woman look stupid.

But he still gave them free publicity and assisted them in spreading their message of hate. And I doubt if she looked stupid to the ilk that groups like that want to reach.

They still are going to appear on the nationally syndicated Mike Gallagher show as part of the deal.

Gallagher was on O'Reilly last night and said the two Phelps daughters made total a##es of themselves on his show yesterday.

Fred Phelps reminds me of the "Tall Man" from "Phantasm".  Truly creepy.

Liberals have a message of hate toward Christians and we still let them on tv.

Oh, baloney!  What "message of hate" is that?

I really appreciate having your point of view around here, Cubs, but sometimes I wish you could untangle your religious beliefs from your political idealogy.

Rush Limbaugh is not an apostle of God, he's just a man.  And politics is just a social construct of man.

Don't bother CL. He rarely responds (his remarks are usually indefensible). He's like a toad sitting in the corner. You poke him with a stick everyonce in awhile and he burps out some nonsense.

I do not know if this has been suggested before but why not go down to WBC and protest against them.Hold up signs that say "God Hates Inbreeders!","God hates False Prophets!", and "What does Fred Phelps and dog **** have in common?,they both stink!"(although that would have to be a pretty long sign). The protest can last for all day and night and for a long time considering that people to hold the signs can be cycled with new people.

Meanwhile, the Amish have set an example for all of us.

Half the mourners at the graveside service of the man of killed himself after killing those five girls were Amish themselves.

Many talk about love and forgiveness. The Amish walk the talk. Having once lived near an Amish community for seven years, I can attest to this.
