'A bill that would require health insurers to cover more of the costs of treating mental health conditions moved forward in Congress on Wednesday with wide backing from employers and insurers.

'The Mental Health Parity Act of 2007 cleared the Senate's Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and now goes to the full Senate for a vote.'

I can only imagine how our Country Club conservative Senators and Reps will vote, but needless to say if you or someone you love is affected by mental illness please contact them and let them know to support this bill

Well suh-lap upside the head and count me surprised as a cat waking up in the dog pound: Rep Sullivan supports the bill!

This Bill is very much needed... and I was just as surprised as you at Sullivan's involvement in it..

Maybe the "kook in the closet".. Is a relative of Sullivan's that needs just this sort of thing for their well being..

Double A

About time. This should have been done long ago. I never thought Sully and I would be on the same page about this or the 1921 race riot memorial! Weird.

The use of stigmatizing language does not help matters.  Early diagnosis and treatment does help quite a bit.

I was amazed when Sen Coburn - a medical doctor - misused the term 'schizophrenia' to denote multiple personalities during the Alito hearings.

About the only way to motivate the insurance industry is legislation.

Personally, I would think better mental health coverage could, to an extent, lower medical costs via reduced health problems related to substance abuse, stress, physical abuse, etc.  Most all are related to various mental conditions.

A lot of people who need it do not seek mental health care, because for many, it's strictly an out-of-pocket expense.

Too bad it took the R's over twenty years to realize that, Onan.  They fought for their clients tooth and nail to deprive the mentally ill treatment, for the same reasons they refuse to raise the minimum wage, require HMO's to discontinue drive-through deliveries, and so forth.  The R's fought FMLA, ADA and MLK Day.

I applaud Sullivan for being dragged kicking and screaming out of the Stone Age.
