For those who don't know, there are a few groups who host weekly get-togethers (cruise nights) for gearheads and general car-oglers. One of the biggest used to be at 71st and Mingo (sponsored by backyard burgers) but has been having trouble finding a home after problems with that sponsor. (Why doesn't someone downtown welcome these people in?) Currently the church at battle creek is hosting them since they have a large parking lot.

I participate fairly regularly and so I got this in email recently from the organizers:

quote:

YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS ONE !!!!!

For those that missed March 13, Tuesday's cruiz.  General Mg. of BackYard (Bryan Bennett), drove throught our group a couple times, even stopped and hassled our VPO (ED).  He ask him who was doing the food.  Ed, said the church, and the money went to help their singles and youth groups activities.

Bryan's answer was (that's a good thing).

By the way we had about 200 + that night.

We arrive last Tuesday night, March 20, to have the two ministers tell us that they had been turned into the health Dept. and shortly later we learned that Back Yard had called the complaint in.  The inspector talked with them at 4:30 Monday. Battlecreek tried all day Tuesday to find a vendor with a food handlers license.  But there was not enough time to pull it
together, so we did not have food that night.  Battlecreek does not want us to leave, the church loves having us.  Today Sonny Mac and myself went and tried the food at the Knotty Pine BBQ,  it is really good.  Knotty Pine agreed to furnish the food in conjunction with the church.  So they will be there this Tuesday night, at the church's sidewalk cafe.

Can you believe Back Yard, would do such a thing to a church.

On a good note we had about 50 to 60 out last Tuesday night (March 20). Even one of our die hearts from Muskogee, was there.  So if you didn't come out, you were missed.  We did not have any rain at the church.

Till next time,
Claudette

Why don't we get this downtown? There are plenty of great locations and likely plenty of people willing to open for food. Get away from the South Tulsa/BA drama.

P.S. Not that I eat at backyard burgers, but I will probably eat their less now.

That is interesting... I used to go there occasionally, but my car is missing a few things right now. Do people ever meet at TGI Friday's anymore? I also remember people used to meet up at the sonic on Brookside on Friday or Saturday night like the used to a long time ago, but I haven't seen anybody around.

What kind of car do you have?

AngieB

I would go if it was downtown -- or at least more centrally located.

What does it take to put one on? You need a food sponsor or what? I'd be willing to help out. Lemmeknow.

Oh, and I know I could get a pack of MINIs to show up!!

The sonic meet was off but I have an email somewhere saying it was back on. They had some disagreements with sonic management because sonic restrooms are generally not public facilities. They are being opened for cruise nights now. That event is mainly old hotrods whereas the bigger show has everything from classic cars to tuners, lowriders, sports cars, trucks, etc.

Food and mainly restrooms are good to have for any event where people will be for a long period of time. I travel with my own shade and chairs but if a space had that, it would be nice as well.

The main thing is a draw. Sponsorships. Auto parts stores will throw in some stuff, the organizers of the tuesday show throw in stuff out of their own pockets. Most shows feature door prizes as well as a half&half cash prize. Tickets are sold during the event with one ticket drawn at the end for 50% of the daily proceeds. The other 50% is pooled all season and a big drawing is done at the end. Number will be drawn from all tickets sold throughout the year.

oh yes, we are going to drive miles out of the way and away from our homes after just getting back from downtown...we are going to go back to downtown.  No thanks.  The 71st/Mingo location was very centrally located for the attending demographic.  I cant comment on the battle creek location as that was out of the way for me.

There are several large parking lots in the Blue Dome district.  Maybe some of the business people would be interested in ponying up the dough to rent the parking lots.

Not everyone who attends works downtown and lives in South Tulsa. I am with you as far as personal convenience, but I still think you will draw a crowd no matter where it is, if done right. Downtown just means it might not be all old white men. And maybe I won't have to listen to rednecks complaining everytime "one of those colored folks" wins a door prize. (not making this up)

it wont work so quit dreaming.  it wont work for these reasons:

people working downtown dont want to drive home, pick up their classic car, and drive it BACK downtown.

the size of the 71st/mingo show spoke for itself that the organizers had found the population center.  the thing was growing out of control.  moving it downtown would severely skew the population center and the show would FLOP.  So please don't blab that downtown would be centrally located.  downtown is so far NOT centrally located its not even funny.

moving it to the bluedome district would bring two things close together...bars and cars.  recipe for disaster.

yeah, and so all the people that work AND live in south tulsa are going to go downtown?  yeah right. funny, I never saw any colored folks winning door prizes.  the old white men managed to win a lot though.

I said downtown OR somewhere more centrally located. I didn't say downtown WAS centrally located.

I think it would be cool downtown. And the backdrop of the skyline would make for some nice photos.

I'm really sick of people b*itching that downtown is dead, but if you suggest something for the area it's inconvenient.

for the people that packed the 71st/mingo location it was pretty damn convienent.  and this doesnt even count the overflow who would go to the jason's deli show at 61st/memorial.

it WAS centrally located.

The parking lot across from McNellies would be a good place to start. McNellies and other establishments could put up a couple tents to serve food and potentially some sort of beverage.

With the city offering free parking after 5pm Downtown there is no cost for the parking.

I can see this being something that can take off because part of the joy of owning an classic car is driving it. The drive from South Tulsa to Downtown is an ideal drive.

Good idea. Now to make it a reality.

Keep on keeping on

I think legally they need the lot owner to sign off. That was why sam's was a sponsor of the 71st and mingo show, even though they didn't do anything. Back when eastland was still a mall and owned by simon I tried talking to them about use of their parking lot and couldn't get a return call.
