Whatever you think of Israel politically, you have to admire their organization and efficiency militarily.  A Continental Airlines flight out of NYC failed to make contact with the Israeli air traffic controllers so it was intercepted by 4 IAF fighters 5 miles out from Israeli air space.

Did we even get planes in the air after 3 planes had already hit?

I just thought that was pretty amazing and wonder if we have learned from our past mistakes or if our response would be a lack thereof should this tactic ever be tried again.

The 9/11 planes weren't coming from 4,000 miles away. That is a lot of time to plan.

Either way, Israel keeps a lot more military on "alert" than we do.

That's only natural when the map your neighbors have hanging on the wall has a large bullseye painted right over your country.

Sorry I couldn't find the appropriate image to illustrate my point:

I dont really consider this fair. They had a lot more time to get their planes in the air. Plus pre-9/11, I wonder if they would have any intercept planes in the air.

Plus, I do beleive we did have a plane in route to intercept Flight 93. I could be wrong, but I thought I remember hearing that we did have planes in route.

Israel has, to the best of my knowledge, had military jets in the air and at the ready since the 50's. I think that the Israeli Army is the security for their airports as well. With all of the wars and battles over there since WWII it make sense that they could easily intercept a commercial jet quickly.

As for Flight 93 I think there were Air Force planes en route.

What would it cost for them to put in a 911 system anyhow.  What did we spend on ours in Tulsa? [;)]

Depends if you want 911 or E911.

Conan71

E911 is sort of like getting my #4 combo super-sized, right?

Good points, the situation was not a mirror of ours but I but their response is still impressive in my opinion.
