The Annex had a 3 screen movie theater and Townsen (sp) Top Shop that sold t-shirts and a Swinsons Ice Cream parlor. There was also a Coney Islander at the end of it. It's still there in the South east corner of the new mall area. I seem to remember a Diamond Jacks food place over there somewhere. They're on 51st now.

Actually, it was a 7 screen theatre, and next to it was the Funway Freeway arcade (which became I think Aladdin's Castle when I'd stopped off there in the 1990s while on a visit). The Townsend Top Shop was once in the Annex Mall, as was a Swenson's Ice Cream Parlor.

Who was that other doofus that sold audio stuff that called himself Doc Rock or something like that. He work sunglasses and a lab coat and was always swinging his arms around. It was always late at night during the movies and such.
Anyone remember??

I remember Doc Rock!  Oh, my! I had forgotten about that goofball.  His commercials were so corny that they were funny.

I wonder if Doc Rock is Sluggos daddy??

I don't remember 7 screens at the Annex. I remember 3, but they may have added some screens later on. I think the Southroads Mall Cinema is where I saw Star Wars.
I remember "Earthquake, in Sensurround" at the Bowman Twin at 31st and Sheridan, which is now Lazer Quest.

TulsaTV

Doc Rock is now the proprietor of Papa Dogs (hot dogs) in Owasso on 86th St N and I-169. They're tasty!

Here's a photo of the Pancake Place.

Wingnut

I could be wrong on the name of the pancake restaurant that was near Woolco in the parking lot, but I do remember the The Pancake Place at 11th & Utica.
Very interesting about Doc Rock. I'll have to check that out sometime.
Thanks for the info.

The Pancake Place was at 11th and Utica. They had a major fire sometime in the late 80s or early 90s and never reopened. The building was torn down and the land has been for sale for years. The restaurant at Southroads mall was called The Pancake Cottage.

Let's see, at the Annex, I saw fare such as "Airplane 2" "Moscow on the Hudson" "Flashdance (I think that's where I saw it)" "White Nights" and "Ghostbusters 2." I saw "Batman" at the Southroads.

Speaking of Southroads, anybody remember the Renberg's store, or Clarke's Good Clothes, Woolf Brothers, or Vandever's? How about the Boot Hill?

We use to ride our motorcycle up the south side of the hill where Shadow Mountain is, west face was too steep to handle, but later got some trails cut in it by the bigger bikes.   That was back around 1964-67.  Good view from the top of the hill.  Shot of many fire crackers from that location then.  Not sure when they built the apartments, but they messed up a great place to ride and hang out as kids. :)

Also the field on the South side of 61st between Sheridan and Memorial was great for riding.  Had lots of trails, one summer it burned and the grass that came back in the spring was bright green.

Katy Wampus riding area was at 61st and Memorial on the North East corner.  Had some good jumps and trails back in the woods.

I saw What's New Pussy Cat at the Bowman Twin theatre.  Also the Sheridan Drive In and Brown's Avaiation Airport were located near 51st and Sheridan then along with Bowls Warehouse Furniture which is now the Farm Shopping Center.

Griff had Kart Ville at 15th and Sheridan and later moved it to I believe was around 31st and Memorial on the south side of 31st.  Parts of the ole track at 15th and Sheridan is still visible, it is the empty lot south of the pizza place there.

There was also Sheridan Lanes and another bowling alley on Yale, Yale Lanes I think,  where Primaux Kia is now.

We also had several Putt Putt Golf Courses, in-ground trampoline and kart places.  Plus lots of great hamburger joints inlcuding the Chuck Wagon on East 11th Street that had the absolute best and largest burgers ever.

Interesting how long so many lots have stood empty in Tulsa.  Kart Ville could be going on 40 plus years.

Here are some cool photos of Tulsa haunts from back in the good old days of Tulsa.  Some of these were gone by the 1980's thought some of you youngsters would like to see some of what you missed, that we enjoyed as kids.

THE ORIGINAL CONEY ISLAND DOWNTOWN - BUILDING IS STILL THERE.

HOWARD JOHNSONS - THEY HAD ALL YOU COULD EAT NIGHTS FRIED CLAMS AND SEA FOOD.

THIS IS THE FAMOUS GOLDEN DRUMSTICK - BEST FRIED CHICKEN IN THE UNIVERSE - WAS ON THE NE CORNER OF 11TH AND YALE - NOW IT IS JUST ANOTHER LAME CONVIENENCE STORE.

This place near I44 and Peoria was a late night favorite for breakfast anytime.

TUlSA DOWNTOWN AT NIGHT - PLACE ROCKED WITH LIGHTS !

CROWN DRUGS WERE IN TULSA - ONE LOCATION WAS AT 11TH AND YALE - SW CORNER, WHERE TALLY'S RESTAURANT IS NOW.

The photos immediately above are from my Tulsa Motels-Restaurants Flickr photo set. The Coney Island shots were taken by Mike Bruchas; most of the rest collected on eBay over the years.

More about the Golden Drumstick on the Other kiddie shows page of Tulsa TV Memories.

Just below this item about the Casa-Del Club (Golden Drumstick's predecessor in the 11th and Yale Spanish-style building), Lee Woodward recalled the 1958 U.S. Open Golf Championship at Southern Hills Country Club.

1969-1972 or therabouts...
Riding dirt bikes at 61st and Sheridan, I recall the hill on the SW corner was nicknamed "Suicide."  Not Suicide Hill, just Suicide.
We also rode where the post office is at 51st and Sheridan and where the Farm Shopping Center was.  The old barn that was standing was quite a hangout for various activities.

I loved Clarks and Vandevers. Clarks was at Southland. Vandevers was at the very end of Southroads on the east side.

I used to live just down the street from The Golden Drumstick. It later became  The Middle Path Cafe, a kind of hippie joint that put bean sprouts on everything.

I used to ride my bike all up and down Route 66. There was Cooks Court, where Paintmaster is now, 66 Tavern, Some type of Swiss Villa motel where Okla Fixture is now, the Will Rogers Motor Court that had little garages with the rooms, very shady and comfy with lots of trees, McColumns (sp) Restaurant newt door. We used to ride our bikes down the hill by what we called East Temple, which is a Masonic Temple. We had all kinds of bike trails and jumps back there.

The train tracks near 11th & Hudson brought in some Illinois Central railcars on time and they were hauled off and refurbished and made into a train restaurant on 11th near Garnett. The wooden water tower is still there. It's now a plumbing contractor I think. The cars long gone.
I remember eating there once or twice.

breitee

The train restaurant was originally called "Iron Horse" and later the "11th Street Train". It is long gone but yes the water tower survives!

Wait a tick! Is what you're referring to that place called "Pizza Train"?
