Word around the campfire is that Palmer's security business had drained him financially.  He needed a job and didn't have a problem being an at will employee for a few years for $165K per year.

Dissenting officers can take heart in knowing that Ms. Taylor stands a good chance of being a one-term mayor.

If she makes it one term.

I really do not know all the info on the BOC lawsuit or what brought it on...

That being said; The mere presence of Palmer is giving others an amplified feeling of mistrust in the City Government.

That much I do know.

(conjecture to follow)

He was the "top dog" at TPD for many years...

He should have known or maybe he did have knowledge of the findings of the lawsuit.... prior to them ever being made public.

Maybe that was the reason he retired....

end of conjecture

We actually, as taxpayers, paid for a search for the best candidate for Chief of Police Tulsa could find....
We got someone that can not begin to do his job without questions being raised. More than likely they will continue to be raised...

doubt, suspicion, distrust...

these are not the things that precede an individual that can begin to lead all of Tulsa in a new direction.

On top of all this success we place an amount of failure and expect it to have no effect..

Sorry, someone chose the wrong horse to bring into this Arena.

Our Mayor had a response.

For the mayor's take on all this, read her statement:

"Chief Palmer has a decade of public service to this city, a record of reduced crime rates and a sincere willingness to serve Tulsa again as Police Chief.

Together, we are making so much progress in this city. We should not return to political bickering. Every neighborhood in this city deserves be safe and we are committed to working toward that goal.

Chief Palmer has been on the job for three days now. I would ask that these two councilors put personal history aside and give him a chance to our fine Tulsa Police officers and partner with us in identifying public safety priorities that will make every neighborhood safe, keep kids out of gangs and make sure seniors feel safe in their homes."

Kathy Taylor, Mayor of Tulsa

As far as the lawsuit by the three prospective internal candidates for chief goes, it now appears their case is moot since Deputy Chief Wells retired and now lives in the OKC area, so realistically there are no longer "three qualified internal candidates," per the charter.  I would suppose the city will just wait for a ruling, and if it doesn't come prior to November 1, officially Wells final day of vacation, sick leave, etc, the issue is completely moot!

I think they will likely look at it as an issue of whether or not there were three certified candidates when the vacancy occured.  The issue is that at the time of vacancy, there were three certified candidates.  Wells retired because the mayor wouldn't play his way, he took his ball and glove and moved to Edmond.

Had Wells already been retired, I'm sure a third candidate could have been certified, if not then there wouldn't have been three and the mayor could have instituted a nation-wide search without going against the charter and there would be no lawsuit now.

I don't think his retirement alone will get it tossed.

Case law says you can't wait for someone to leave/die..... to win your side of a law suit.  Otherwise, the city could just wait someone, or a group of people, out.

The suit goes on until it is ruled upon.
