I've tried La Roma (not tried his pizza, just the Lebanese food), and Shawkats.
Cedars is supposed to be good, but haven't tried them. Jamils was okay too.
Any recommendations?

I tried Cedars, and really enjoyed it. The restaurant on 21st & Harvard (I think Jim's never on Sunday) is also good.

Mimi's brother owns La Roma. I've eaten at H & M but they use too much garlic in their food. Very nice people, and warm atmosphere, and though I love garlic, they go overboard in my opinion. That's my only complaint.
Now Shawkat tends to go easy on the oil, and only uses lean meat, so for a more healthy version, I like his meals better.

Jamil's Steakhouse...wow. What a fall from grace! I have been going there since I was a kid and in the last 7yrs or so they have gone down hill. Do not look at the restrooms or even your celery in the appitizer tray if you wish to keep your appetite. Institution? YES. Filthy dirty? WAY YES!!!
We were there one night after the PGA...slammed busy,BUT (yes there were about 5-8 PGA pros in there at the same time) the daughter of the owner (or neice or whatever) was having a crying fit and wailing about something in the dining room! Across the aisle from her uncle or dad....disgusting!
FILTH,Bad managment= removal from cell phone address book...even for take-out.
C'mon I-44 widening!

If you ever find yourself east of Hwy 169 (or even if you don't), Shish-kabob's by the old Albertson's at 31st & Garnett is definitely worth a visit. I try to eat there at least twice a month. don't know. it's all a blur. but there's the same Carl's Coney Island at Executive Mall I remember from when the family would go there and eat coneys and watch "Charlie's Angels" on tv back in the 70s... Yep. It hasn't changed a bite. [  ] |

Everything you said there is true and is the reason we will NEVER eat there! What we saw about 15 years ago was a huge roach crawling on the table. Then my sister went about a year ago and she could not eat the food, the place was filthy. What a shame. |

My husband tried this place a couple months ago and said it was the worse food he ever had. Greasy and not very tasty compared to the other places mentioned (positively that is). |

LOL. If I hear someone tell me the food at Shish-kabobs is "the worst food they ever had," it makes me suspicious of their tastes in general. [:O] I admit I don't eat "Mediterranean" food that often-- but have eaten at several middle eastern places in Chicago over the years. And I used to live in Chicago's Little Pakistan where I enjoyed going to different restaurants there for Chicken Biryani, Vendaloo, etc... it was actually a former-Chicagoan who recommended Shish-kabobs to me when I moved to Tulsa... I usually get the kabobs for lunch and never see even a smudge of "grease" from those kabobs on the basmati rice. I once got one of their stews I wasn't crazy about, but other than that, it fit the bill. The cabbage rolls I ate that could have been greasy... weren't. Some of the restaurant experiences I read about on this forum remind me of why I was so hesitant to move to the apt complex I live at around 41st and Garnett... people told me this area of town was "horrible" and how their experience at a similar apt complex was "a nightmare." To each his own. I'll continue to eat lunch regularly there... [  ] |
