I am getting this rumor second hand. If you have details please let us know. I don't want to perpetuate an urban myth.

My friend tells me his elderly parents received this call. Anti River tax folks have been making phone calls to older home owners and identifying themselves as an official of the county tax assessor and informing them that their homes will be re-assessed if the river project passes. They are then told, of course their property taxes will be increased. The elderly may very well be the key demographic in this race. They are most likely to vote in any single topic election.

This is almost criminal spin. If you assume that the river project is successful and creates increased demand for housing near the river corridor, then property values are also likely to increase. That normally is considered good news. But under this gloomy scenario, it means you will have to pay higher ad valorem taxes. And they imply that its large and immediate. They neglect to tell the homeowner that the rate of increase is limited to 6%(not sure of that amount) each assessment. They neglect to tell them that it will take two years before approvals are secured for major river work which then will take several more years to accomplish, meaning any increase in value is several years away. Even if the gathering areas are done quickly, the increase in property tax is more than offset by the increase in the value of the greatest asset in their portfolio, their home.

Consider this... I offer you $20 now for an investment of $1.20 at the end of this year and $2.40 at the end of next year.  Then I make a similar gifts each year for 10 years and require similar payback amounts for each of the next 10 years. Are you in?

I got a robocall from Ken Yazzel who basically identified himself as the property tax assessor, talked about taxes being too high and that voting for the river tax will make them even worse.

It was very carefully crafted to sound like the message WB's friends heard, but without actually stating such.

Who's desperate now? Ken Yazzel should be as ashamed as the phonies who empty old folks bank accounts. What a geek.[:(!]

Wasn't Ken Yazel served with a restraining order in 2005 for making personal phone calls to an female employee at home and breathing heavily into the phone?

I give Ken Yazel credit for cleaning up some of the GOB stuff (blair mansion being listed as a farm, etc) but he keeps getting in trouble. And then there's that one guy he shot..

that racist site makes some pretty tall claims.

I don't agree with everything Yazel likes, but one thing for sure, if a guy that assesses taxes is trying to keep your taxes down....that can't be a bad thing!  Would you rather have Randi Miller as your tax assessor?  We'd all be giving our first born to the county.

That wasn't in Tulsa County. It was in Okmulgee County.

It prompted the Sheriff to completely stop the use of reserve deputies there.

If his intent is to keep property taxes down by making sure the property values don't rise, that is a bad thing! But frankly, I'd rather we had no tax assessor!

I think that's conflict of interest. He should only be allowed to shoot people in Tulsa county.
