Look at what a good democrat has come up with and some of you all thought that all democrats were bad.

Rep. Shuler to Introduce Bi-partisan (Secure America through Verification and Enforcement) Act

quote:
October 30, 2007: Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) is making final preparations on legislation emphasizing the principles of Attrition Through Enforcement. The SAVE Act will broaden and enhance border security and interior enforcement. With a number of border security Democrats and Republicans already agreeing to co-sponsor, this bipartisan effort may be Congress's best chance to achieve substantial immigration reform this Congress.

The principle behind Attrition Through Enforcement is that living illegally in the United States will become more difficult and less satisfying over time when the government – at ALL LEVELS – enforces all of the laws already on the books. It is also imperative that the government with the full cooperation of the private sector, implements certain workplace enforcement measures. The goal is to make it extremely difficult for unauthorized persons to live and work in the United States. There is no need for taxpayers to watch the government spend billions of their dollars to round up and deport illegal aliens; they will buy their own bus or plane tickets back home if they can no longer earn a living here.

We know Attrition Through Enforcement works because, in states that have passed tough new laws to penalize employers of and deny public benefits to illegal aliens, the illegal aliens began to move out of those states, often before the new laws are even implemented. As it currently stands, almost 200,000 illegal aliens self-deport from the United States every year, but imagine how many more would leave if our government refused to award illegal aliens another amnesty, mandated all employers to verify a person's eligibility to work here, cracked down on identity fraud and enabled local police to easily transfer illegal aliens in their custody to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.

spoonbill

I read that too.  Looks like a good bill.  I like the fact that it mandates enforcement of existing law.  It will get some resistance from Democrats from the left coast that rely on the hispanic voting block.

The reason that many of the existing laws are not enforced is not just a question of manpower, but liability.  This bill will get bogged down in the racial-profileing argument. I promise!

You see, when a highway patrol officer pulls over a van for speeding with 20 illegal aliens inside, and finds out that the license plates are stolen and the driver is drunk, he can incarcerate the driver, but the moment he attempts to verify the citizenship of the occupants he will get slapped with a racial profiling suit.

Many communities in Oklahoma, and across the country, actually rely on illegal populations of workers for their very survival.

If you want to see this any day, go to Tahlequah and Wagner.  The neighboring city of Hulbert has one of the country's largest commercial nurseries, Tri-B (next to Fort Gibson Lake).  They supply trees, shrubs, and flowers to Wal-mart, Lowe's, Home Depot, and dozens of other box store clients.  Tri-B owns several operations all over the state and across the country (over 5,000 acres of production).  They employ thousands of "immigrant" workers.

Only a small number of these workers are legal.  Most live in Tahlequah where there is a fairly large un-employed native american work force that would simply be too expensive to employ and provide benefits for.  The small economies of Wagner, Hubert, and Tahlequah rely on this population of illegals.  Law enforcement has a "hands off" policy when dealing with these people.  Tri-B is the largest tax payer in the region (over 300 million in sales a year).  No illegals, no new police cars.

I wonder how the bill that passed yesterday and this bill will affect these communities?
