OK Time Capsule

For anyone who does not have time to come to the ceremony from Noon to 2pm at Veteran's Park (21st & Boulder) tomorrow and would still like to see the capsule, it was unloaded at the park around 1pm this afternoon.

It is located in the park along Boulder about 200 yards or so north of 21st St., roughly across from the Mental Health Association of Tulsa building.

For those of you who work downtown, if this is of interest, might be worth a drive-by on your way home.

There should also be coverage of the capsule on the news tonight on 2, 6, 8, 11, and 23.

Officials will still accept time capsule submissions up until noon tomorrow using guidelines on the web site.

The two major contributions are the 2007 Harley Street Glide donated by Myers-Duren H-D and a Hasty Bake grill along with 300 smaller sealed capsules and several poly tubs of artifacts.  There is also a special tribute capsule to the veterans which will be the first item people will see in 2057 with it's own "shrine" at the front of the main vessel.

Thanks for the update.  Did they decide on a above or below ground?  I heard the Mayor say "buried" on KRMG the other day but understood some of the design team felt above ground would be less pool-like in the long run.

Marnie Ducato alternatively that capsule and the motorcycle were to be "buried" tomorrow several times on Joe Kelley's show this morning on KRMG.  I also notice it's mentioned that way on the TYPros web site.  "Buried" has a very negative connotation for time capsules in this town.

The honest truth is we will be going back in front of the park board, I believe, in December to discuss above grade, partial sub-grade, or fully sub-grade.

For now, the capsule will be sealed and stored at an off-site location.

Based on William Franklin's site renderings (really stunning, it would be great if he would post them...hint, hint) many of us would prefer to see an above or partial sub-grade installation.

As well, the engineering required for above grade has been completed and is much more simple.  Drainage is not an issue with above grade.  There's not so much concern about preservation of the vessel and artifacts sub-grade as there will be a vault regardless.

The concern with total sub-grade is if the vault ever fills with water, there is a possiblity that the vessel could float.  We have not done water displacement studies on the vessel as up until the October park board meeting it was anticipated, and materials had been donated for an above-grade vault.

Also the center of gravity is not at the lowest point in the vessel since the motorcycle is actually being placed on a slide out tray about 6" off the bottom of the vessel, so there is concern that the contents might be upset if the vessel floats.

More questions than answers at this point, unfortunately.  I will monitor this site and will provide updates as details develop.

Thank you for your interest.

OooooK, Well here goes.

First off we dont want to  put the vessel underground for several reasons. One being that it will dramatically up the cost and we are raising the money through donations and it will be much harder to raise enough money to have it underground. You would have to build water tight walls below ground and also have a way for any water that got in to drain out. So some sort of underground drainage system would be required.

So we came up with the idea of building something around the vessel above ground. We already have a company that is willing to donate the colored and textured cement blocks to build the structure. Plus a company to donate the cement "lid coverings" and also one that would donate the decorative cement border around the top edge.

One group of people we met with did not like our initial above ground design saying it looked too bulky and like a toumb. "actually that was the 3rd completely different design we came up with but we wont go there". They seem to really want it to be below ground to keep the structure around the time capsule from looking too large. But we want it above ground lol.

So I have gone back to the drawing board and have tried to come up with some possible compromise ideas that I hope they will like. Some are partly in the ground only a few feet. Others are still above ground but have elements around the structure to break up the "box/toumb" look.

One other reason we didnt want it below ground or under a mound of dirt was that if we were going to go to all the work, time and effort to make a platform, walls etc. that we might as well do a bit extra and have something that people would enjoy, not something that is hidden.  We wanted to create something decorative, a gift to be enjoyed. Something that would add to the park and become a point of interest.

We came up with the idea of creating a giant sundial to place on the structure. The Centennial Sundial. We also hope to create a brick plaza around it.  A Centennial Time Plaza. This is our dream anyway lol. Oh and we have been very lucky to have a local company and someone else on here volunteer to build the Centennial Sundial.

But first we have to get the structure approved, then get the Sundial approved throught the Arts Commission. None of that has turned out to be as simple and straight forward a thing to do as I first imagined lol.

Here is the first of the Sundial ideas that we showed them. They didnt like how large and toumb like the base looked. And I actually agree. We were quite rushed at the time and I was keeping it as simple, easy and cheap to build as I could.

But I went back to the photoshop board and here are some designs I have come up with.

This has the base about 2 feet underground and with a simple bench design going around it to break up the mass.

This is also partly underground with a bench/ planter combo around the base, further breaking up the mass and adding more interest. Plus I have added some detail to the sundial and shown an option of making it black. The sundial will be made of cut and welded sheets of steel. In all the other images it is left its natural rust color. But I suspect we can find a way to make the metal black if we like that idea.

This shows the base completely above ground again. Easier in one way because we dont have to worry about the difficulty of below ground contruction and figuring out a way to drain anything. But a bit more difficult  planter/bench design than the others.

My favorite would be either one of the last 2. I fluctuate between which I like best.

Here is one more, completely above ground with a stepped design. I dont really like it as much. But there would be no plantings to upkeep and the parks board may like that better. But it also looks more tempting to climb. Which they probably would not like.

The brick pavers that people can buy will be around the structure and there would be a half circle of large spheres on the North side of the Sundial to act as numbers. I have thought of the idea of seeing if one of the local artists or a group of people would be willing to do a Sun Mosaic design with sun rays going out to the spheres on the walkway area. Just another thought. Basically I have been trying to come up with something that is as easy and inexpensive as possible to build. Yet that would also have as much impact as possible for the buck.  If there are any donors out there we are still taking contributions lol. The more we get the better it can be.[8D]

I think second from the 4th would be my pick, with the partial stepping.  It doesn't say "climb on me" like two or three, IMO.  But that's why you are an artist and I'm, uh, well, uh, not one.

Maybe they should show your conceptual drawings and do one of those Fox 23 flash polls. [;)]

Oh nooooo. If there is one thing I am certain of. Republicans have no sense of artistry or aesthetics. [:P]

However, this design and idea is very basic, simple and straight forward, so should be able to be appreciated by even the most republican republican.  I hope.

I also lean more towards the fourth one. And some lush plantings in it could help give it that extra punch. The other designs are a bit too... average.

Oh and one other idea I had was instead of the round spheres for the numbers, we could use large urns or simple planters with flowers and greenery in them instead. Would give the whole thing a more welcoming, park/garden look. Would also help kind of enclose, cozy up, and soften the "plaza". But again more upkeep. However, if we did that I myself would go and seasonally change out the 12 planters. Would be a more decorative touch and make the plaza more tempting to walk over to. The spheres definitely have the advantage of easy maintenance.

It might be nice to have one of those centennial park benches placed under the front of the sundial as well if we can get one.  The rising sun motif would add nicely to the whole sundial, Centennial Time Plaza thing.

Hmm, though just noticed the cutout buffalo and cowboy. Might clash with my scrolly design on the sundial.

I am a republican and have a great sense of taste.. My one piece of official art is excellent, but unfortunately I have to credit the artist more than my taste..

Anyway, capsule done sealed. I think they weren't expecting that size of crowd and the person handling the crowds in/out of the capsule area didn't do so very well.

All in all, it was a fun and well-attended event.

Yeah, well us Republicans may not be able to discern art, but we sure can smell a bad political slush-fund or two! [;)]

I'm anxious to see what they finally will allow for the final resting place of the vessel.

Saw Mr. & Mrs. Grizzle, Restored2x, and The Artist down at the park.  Who else we don't know was there?

Kinda surprised RM didn't stop by after his gig at the Garden Center.  I'm sure they would have thrown a bag of recyclables in the capsule for him.  He did a great job on the radio today, BTW.  That boy's a natural-born public speaker.

Tool?  What, does he look like a jack-hammer?

Talking about this DB?

Actually, my mole in operation wasn't even aware they were going to let the general public tag the inside of the vessel with graffiti.  That was a total last-minute surprise, apparently.  Who was that poor bastard who had to keep track of the spray paint cans anyhow?

I saw artist trying to sneak over the cattle fence with a can of gold paint.

I thought I was going to pee my pants when Mayor Taylor picked up the sledge hammer and whacked the end-bell on the vessel after they set it in place.  She's a fairly small gal, but I'll give her some creds, she's got a pretty good swing!

Great photos artist.  Is it just me or does Bill Lobeck look younger and a little different every time I see him with the Mayor?  Wait, that's the anti-river whack-job nazi that debated w/ Eagleton isn't it?

I need to see what all we got in the way of photos from about five or six cameras.  It was a neat, neat event.

Cool event!

Is it true that they sealed in Jimmy Hoffa in the time capsule?
