This is a sad story...

Students Walk Out Of Class
A small crowd of Owasso 9th and 10th graders protested outside of the Mid-High Friday afternoon. They say since House Bill 1804 became law other students have started harassing them, even calling them derogatory names.

"We come here just like everybody else. But, they make it seem like we're all from Mexico. We're all, we're nothing to them, like we don't do anything here. Like we're just coming here to invade. They want us to go back like we belong there. I mean, I was born in America," said Maria Aguilera, a 10th grader in Owasso.

"You know, I'm sure some of them have some raw feelings and nerve endings, there's confusion and frustration. They're upset about some things. We want to deal with whatever we can to solve what problems we can," added Don Huggins, principal of Owasso Mid High.

School administrators plan to sit down with the students next week to address their problems.

Doubly sad because it was so predictable.  Do we really need the events of Jena, LA propagating through the rest of our school systems?

I heard the police calls on my radio, but since I came in after the incident started, I didn't really understand what was going on.  But my son was about to get out of school.  I was concerned for his safety since there were at least 4 police units in the area.  He called to tell us that it was just a protest.  I'll hear more about it on Monday, I'm sure.

May you live in interesting times.

I would never expect anything like this to happen in the "City of Character"!

oh this is utter BS.  I'm sure this harrassment was going on before HB1804.  I thought all the bleeding hearts were empty by now.....I guess not.

I am sure that the mighty inteller knows the truth, even if all the information in the story says otherwise.

Inteller...are you an Owasso ninth grader?

What makes it BS?  Because you say so?  You don't know anything about these kids or the problems they face.  So, stop talking out your *ss. [xx(]

And this means something because CL is an expert in this area.

As for the children, someone should put them in contact Orta or the frivolous lawsuit folks.
Someone get Hoss a pacifier.

the people that these kids should be mad at are their illegal parents for coming here and creating this problem.

Where in the article does it say that their parents were illegals?

Bad assumption. Maybe they are from Puerto Rico (Born American citizens) - or their parents are LEGAL immigrants. In any case, the kids are citizens and should be treated with the same respect as any American, even if their parents were illegal.

Not all Hispanics are from Mexico. Not all Hispanics are illegal.

Why should this young person be treated any differently than any other American?  Give me a good reason.

And culturally, there's a big difference between Mexicans and Puerto Ricans, who are different from Dominicans, who are different from Cubans, etc.

HA!  When I was in Intermediate HS at Union, (I know, whoo-hoo, Union, south-side, I get it)  The native Spanish speaking students would take Spanish I, II, etc and ace the class.  "Lucky bastards!" we fumed.  Why weren't we lucky enough to be born someplace else!!  WHY WEREN'T WE MEXICAN TOO???  Then we too could take Spanish and blow it off. [:P] SO you got real smart about making some new friends in your Spanish class and know what?  You made a great new friend who just happened to be from Mexico.  Maybe we had a glamorized view if Mexico as the place of sombreros and enchiladas and bars but I remember guys thinking some of those girls were HAWT. But in my crowd, I don't remember anyone being mean.

Forgot to add that was 15-16 years ago...damn.

But, apparently, to inteller those are "BS" distinctions.  So, apparently, is the the distinction between American and foreign national.  And Guido thinks that it's all "frivolous".  Keep talking guys.  You are digging your self a deep hole that makes you look a lot less like people who care about the law, and a lot more like racists.  I'd love for you all to show us that you aren't.  So, should an American with the last name of Aguilera be treated any differently than a Smith or a Jones?  Hint:  the only answer is "no".
