We were taught how to do this back in the 70s when I was a boy scout.

I remember trying to do it with steel wool that had lots of soap on it (Brillo Pad). It worked, but it sure stunk for a while.

So, okay, I guess I must be the last person to have heard of this.  I read it on one of the sailing forums I belong to.  It makes perfect sense, basically an induced "short" like a lightbulb or electric stove, but never thought a 9V battery would throw enough current to make stainless get that hot.  I know a fresh one curls my tongue, but that's about it!

I know I didn't do it in scouts, I must have quit before I did my survival badge.
