I'd consider an actual elevator a waste expense and a detriment in my house.  It takes up space and adds TONS to the maintenance as well as initial cost.  A dumb waiter, laundry shout, garbage shout, or lift of some kind to send items up and down might be useful.  But I'd view an elevator as a slight negative.

Then again, I'm a mobile youngin' without $500,000.

A dumb waiter would be a less costly compromise for the grocery thing. Plus just putting your laundry room on the same floor as your master bedroom and bath or just having 2 small stackable units on different floors would work. One set for the master, the second set for the guest/kids rooms. Plus, stairs are good exercise.

If I had $500,000 to spend on a house, I might want an elevator too.. just to say I had one.
