KJRH Goes High Def

Starting with the 10pm newscast on 2-25-08, KJRH went high def with all of their local news coverage.  They were the first station in the state to do so and one of only about 45 across the country.

I'm not usually a Channel 2 news person, but this will definitely make me switch.  I watched this morning's news program and the 6:00 tonight and, WOW!

I really thought KOTV or KTUL would have beat them to the punch.

KOTV won't be far behind.  I remember a few weeks ago they said we should notice a clearer picture due to some new cameras they had which, ultimately, will be used in their HD broadcasts.

Good for KJRH though, they usually bring up the rear in the ratings so maybe this will help.  I think they do a good job.

I've switched to KJRH for my nightly news just because they're in HD. I thought it'd be years before any local news would be in HD here.

But all those upgrades and they still haven't decided to purchase an ampersand.

It's still Texas AM on the scoreboards and tickers.

I know zero about TV, but how hard can it be? They use some type of computer keyboard to input data, right?

At the beginning of the sports segment the right edge of the screen is just the back of the studio, like they forgot to extend the set to accomodate the wider picture.

And once in the intro of the 10 p.m. news tonight they had double side curtains. That was weird.

I also don't understand why it seems like non of the non local video is in high-def. Some of these videos that come in have to be shot in HD.

The cool high-def weather graphics have got me actually watching more of the weather rather than fast forwarding to the 7 day forecast.

They did have a story either in HD or scaled beautifully to HD resolutions on the news this morning... so they are out there.

I think some of their field cameras are HD.  I don't think they are just flipping the 16:9 switch on SD cameras there.

Really, I think they just keep it in SD for the old ****ers.  Notice how Dan the weatherman has been noticeably absent.  There is only so much "softening" you can do.

So I'm still not getting a consensus here...

Are they doing some sort of mix of SD and HD?

What do they broadcast in?  720p or 1080i?

NBC stations are 1080i.

They have a mix of EDTV and HDTV signals....it should all be getting mashed together for 1080i.  Could be that the upconverting of the widescreen 480P to 1080i yields the "softening" effect.

One thing they need to fix on this article:

http://www.kjrh.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=b0f17900-d9d4-46e3-b66b-e42384f2c502

Is that graphic stating Full HD.  They are NOT sending out 1080P Full HD.

Im calling you out

Full HD?  LOL

But most of their shots seem to be 16:9 at something less than 1080?

Maybe Channel 6 will have a complete HD broadcast when they move to their new location and can hopefully do a full overhaul of their cameras.

Big deal. I wish they would leave our TV system alone as it is. Analog TV worked fine for 70 years. I guess the gov't is pushing HDTV so they can sell off the analog air waves to cell phone companies.[xx(]

I understand only some shows will be done in full HDTV, the rest will be done in less than 1080 lines in order to offer more shows or channels or something like that. The other grades of HDTV will offer pictures simular to todays annalog TV set with 550 or so lines, no doubt to cut corners as time passes and the HDTV fad fizzles away more and more shows will be done in less than full 1080 lines. Google is going to buy the airwaves.

This thread was started talking specifically about KJRH (Channel 2)'s newscasts.  The local stations have all been broadcasting in HD for quite a while now - Which meant that certain ABC CBS NBC and Fox shows were actually in HD.  Until this week, none of the local stations had a newscast that was actually in HD tho.  Now Channel 2 has an HD broadcast, but from reading this thread (I havent seen the broadcasts myself) It seems like they didnt go "whole hog" just yet - Lots of leftover non-HD material mixed into their broadcast.

Probably going to be a long time before EVERYTHING broadcast is 16:9 720p or better - The federal mandate is only that things go DIGITAL, and not HIGH DEF.  4:3 480i is probably going to live on for years.
