I finally got out my clubs and got to play a round of golf yesterday. It was a good Friday and I played better than ever before. The main reason was that I started taking some golf lessons from PGA pro Don Maddox. He was the teaching pro at Southern Hills and now has a shop in the Fikes Center at 51st and Lewis next to the liquor store.

The city-owned course is now managed by a third party, Billy Casper Golf. The heavy rains from earlier in the week left the course in pretty rough shape with lots of storm debris near the creeks. The staff had done a good job picking up all the tree limbs from the winter ice storm, however. I was pleased to see that the majestic cluster of six cottonwoods on hole fifteen of the Pecan Valley course had made it unscathed. The greens were in great shape for this early in the year and it look slike they have paid special attention to the fringes and sand traps around the greens as well.

Another reason I played well was that there were a few less trees on some of the back nine. I am a tree-hugger for a living, but as a golfer, I am a tree-hitter. I only hit one ball in the water all day which is rare for me. My balls like water so much they even roll up next to the water hoses of the greenskeepers.

The clubhouse needs some attention, with the snack bar only having a limited menu and the golf shop not very well stocked with golf stuff for sale. I know that the course just re-opened with new management and I trust they will get these details worked out.

The fees for two golfers with a cart were $54 (or $27 each) which seemed a good price for a Friday afternoon. I tried to book ahead to save a few dollars on both the GolfNow and TulsaGolf websites, but both had been disabled so we paid full price.

An interesting side note was the number of people picnicking and fishing around the course. I have never seen so many of each. I bet there were at least 50 kids with fishing poles and twice as many smaller kids running around. I saw families everywhere enjoying the day and watching us hit our little white balls.

I plan to dedicate my life to golf and start ignoring politics. They both have downhill lies, but in golf you get to improve your lie every once in a while.

Are you allowed to talk like that on this forum?

You gotta dirty mind.

Stay away from any golf references to my bag, the hole, or a wedge shot. I don't swing that way.

I'd enjoy playing golf with you sometime.  I've not gotten my clubs out in a few years and I'd like to play a little this year and could use the exercize.

Cannon Fodder and I went to a gun range by Okmulgee Lake today and exercized our 2nd amendment rights.  There were lots of campers out, people fishing, and water was gushing over the spillway of the lake.  That was a cool sight.  CF's a pretty crack shot no matter what gun you put in his hands.

I guess his parents were smart to name him Cannon.

I smell the makings of a TulsaNow Golf Invitational!

How about a benefit to support maintenance on one of the courses?

Ok, now we just need the T-shirts, hats, and keychains (with bottle opener of course).

Yeah, it's early, it's Monday, and I don't have anything else to do yet.

VERY nice!

Unless there is a windmill and a waterfall, I'm out. I have trouble staying under 3 digits on a mini-golf course.

cannon_fodder

I'd be in.  Though I'm horrible.

I like to golf, but bad doesn't describe my level of suck.  My gold game is the inverse of my bowling game, with 100 being the operative figure in each.  My balls are constantly wet, I end up putting from the rough, and can't seem to get in a hole no matter which way I swing.

I crush grooves.

This proposed tournament should not be about good golf. It should be about fun.

I play in a tournament each year where each team has to at least once throw a ball, kick a ball and putt like a pool cue.

It gets out of control. It is the only tournament I know of where players are urged to wear a cup.

I hate golf played for competition!

To me, golf is just something that occasionally happens while drinking beer!  Much like bowling!

What should this benefit?

A buddy of mine plays in the Captain Morgan Open each year.  You're required to drink a shot of Captain Morgan before you tee off each hole.  While 18 holes is available, most folks only play nine.

Gee.  I wonder why.

Come on grizzle, I will drive and you can pour the Bloody Mary's.

We've always played a beer a hole.  I call it "Putting Juice".

Others call it "Swing Oil".  Either way it does seem to improve my game.

Not my score, my game! [;)]
