So does Church of Real Porn.
Real Adult Church Bookstore is a tad confusing.

Guess what's going to help with downtown revitalization?  Creating a fun, tolerant, diverse place to be.  South Tulsa can be "family friendly" (read: boring and intolerant) if they want.  I want downtown to be diverse and full of open-minded, creative people...

The way that reads, you should kick yourself out first. Care to reword?

I've never heard of the place. Thanks to the Real Church (and this forum) I now know where to get porn downtown.

I know what you're saying ReCycle, and I agree. But the church is simply protesting what most all of us would agree with. We don't need a porn shop in the new downtown revitalization. Even a well remodeled one where the floors aren't sticky.

You'd be wrong.  I have absolutely no problem with the porn shop, and I'm certainly not the only one.

I personally think that downtown churches, while beautiful, have done much more to hinder downtown revitalization than the Midtown Adult Superstore (which has been there for as long as I can remember).

I find it rather odd, that the Brookside strip, one of Tulsa's "entertainment districts," is lined with churches.  There aren't a bunch of churches along Beale Street in Memphis, the River Market in Little Rock, Mass Street in Lawrence, Kansas, and I don't remember seeing churches in Westport in Kansas City.  Another Tulsa oddity.

Being a woman...I want to throw my 2 cents in.  I have no problem with porn...no problem if a man watches porn.  Everything in moderation.  If you can enjoy it...and it helps you to enjoy each other...then HEY..GO FOR IT.  I personally think that the adult stores here in town are fairly tasteful considering the alternative.
I agree with the comment about the 1st amendment...well said.

Peace Out!

Apparently you're right. That's surprising to me but whatever. The last time I visited one of these places I was about 23yrs old. It seemed kind of seedy and the crowd was definitely creepy but if people are okay with it being downtown amidst a new look Tulsa, fine.

So you saw a woman in her bloomers?

waterboy

[:D]Yeah, she was wearing them on her head.

The bookstore pays more in taxes than the so called church.

And it's likely more exciting.

I can think of only two churches in Brookside and one of them used to have a bar in the parking lot.

There is a funeral home -- glad Claude's across the street finally painted over the "We Grind Our Own Meat" sign.

It's just the way the city grew.  The concept of an "entertainment district" evolved over the years.

There's the Presbyterian church on the west side behind the old Sunset Grill building, then there's one church on the SE corner of 36th, then Trinity Methodist (think that's the name) about a block or two further south on the east side of the street.

Bugo- those churches have been around since Brookside was a retail center and not a night-life center.

I never pay particular attention to the book store when I go down Elgin, does the sign still bill it as the "Midtown Art Theater"?

As an info-gatherer on the TulsaNow DowntownLive project, I was assigned the block that includes the "Midtown Adult Superstore" and given the task of discovering everything related to restaurants, retail, nightlife, etc within that block.  Since the store falls into both retail and nightlife, I went in.

I have to admit, I entered with trepidation.  (Expecting a dark, seedy place...with, I don't know...PeeWee Herman doing the hand jive, I guess.)  What I found made me laugh out loud: a bright, shiny, clean adult toy store with a young, friendly clerk.  (Much nicer than Orpha's Lounge, by the way, which was pretty darn creepy and unwelcoming.)

I learned all about the place, and now consider myself an expert, though not a customer. (Yet.)

They have a large selection of magazines, videos, toys, accessories, and enough lube to put Texaco out of business.  There are also 3 or 4 theaters, which show multiple movies each on a continuous loop.  People buy tickets for a theater, and they can watch for hours, if they wish.  (While I was chatting with the clerk, several corporate workers--judging by the khaki pants and polo shirts--stopped in and quietly bought tickets for some after work entertainment.)  I din't go into the theaters themselves, so I can't describe that experience.

According to the clerk, they get all kinds of people: singles, couples, gay, straight, all economic levels and all demographics.  They're especially busy when couples come in after the bars close at 2:00 AM.

So there you go.  Your very own virtual tour of the Midtown Adult Superstore.

I'm sure they will thank the church for the free publicity. [:)]
