I kind of remember a pirate captain/ship theme but am not sure.

It was Shotgun Sams on 51st and on Sheridan.  I always enjoyed their pizza.  Kens is different than Mazzios, I've never really cared for Mazzios, the cheese tastes weird to me.

I may have found the "subtle sauce" a bit bland but don't really remember.  I like the crust thick enough to hold a bunch of stuff.  A thin layer of sauce, cheese, and a few slices of pepperoni just doesn't cut it for me.

However, I don't remember disliking Kens, Shakeys, or another one that I can't remember the name of that I think was on 51st just west of either Sheridan or Yale on the north side of the street.

I like pizza.  I just need to have some Maalox on hand for later.

Are you thinking of Pizza Inn? One of my favorites from the past was Hemi's Pizza.

The big difference is in the crust and the sauce.  Ken's originally was a thin, crispy crust, with a very subtle sauce.  Mazzio's started out as a thicker crust and a more intense sauce.  (I am suspicious there may be MSG in it.  Due to the intensity and the friends who get MSG type headaches when eat there.)

I like them both a lot, but Ken's is a particular favorite.  As was Shakey's.

I can still vividly remember the taste of Shakey's cheese pizza.  We ate there all the time at the one on Brookside.  They had a drink called green grog as well, something similar to Mountain Dew as I remember.

I remember the Shakey's in Illinois. It had a viewing window so you could watch your pizza get made (big thing in the 70s). They also had awesome potato "chips", I guess that is what you would call them.

And another one in Prague and Eufala.  And the Chandler one tastes the same.  (Better than it's step-child Mazzio's).

You don't have to go that far.  There is one in Sapulpa.

They just don't do "overdo" here like some areas of the country.

Seems like there was a Godfathers somewhere out south for a while, too, but can't remember where.

There was a Godfather's on S Lewis around 71st- near the Skate World.
