I try not to think of those except on bill paying day.

Mine arrive staggered enough that I have a couple of bill paying days.

I went to that post office once at lunch and there were a bunch of people in line.  Only one window was open even though I saw at least 3 people there.  The line didn't move for 15 minutes and one of the guys mumbled something and went to leave and the lady at the window yelled "excuse me" or something like that.  He came back and one of the other ladies got him what he needed right away.  I think it took like 30 minutes or more to ship my package.

The postal carrier in my neighborhood always gives my mail to my neighbors and gives me theirs.  Sometimes the neighbors will come bring it to me or I will see "wrong address" written on my mail a lot.  Then I get my neighbors mail all the time and I leave it in the mailbox with the flag up but they never take it unless I leave a giant note on it.  I complained to the supervisor at the post office and she said she would take care of it but didn't ask for any of my information.  I asked her if she needed my name, address, and phone number and I bet she pretended to write it down.  Nothing has changed.

We need to abolish the governement postal system and let private industry take over.  The post office is losing billions and they have to advertise to get people to use them instead of UPS or someone else.  Our tax dollars are going to advertise a wasteful and failing government organization.

Ahh, but think how much that government subsidized loss saves you on your eBay purchases sent in Postal Priority flat rate boxes  ;)

Oh, and expect one of the big government libs to be stopping by anytime to explain that a few billion in losses is no big deal.  It's not like it all adds up or anything.

When Netflix goes 85% online and some of our local service providers finally offer online billing I can go without USPS.

I read the local over-reaction to some of our post offices closing though so I'm not sure that'll happen any time soon.  Apparenly it's an attack on the poor.

You can pay anyone via your bank's online banking.  If your payee doesn't support electronic payments.   Billpay will send them a check.    Of course.. you'll still get the bill/statement via the mail..

Delivered by USPS.

I do.  Still alot of USPS getting their fingers in there until all of them can do electronic transfers.

Nope, I don't care about USPS...I rarely use it.
Time to spin it off and privatize, stop subsidising it and let the postage float to the appropriate market rate.  Government agencies that use the mail can have the various carriers bid for their business (which should cost less overall then the subsidies).

Of course, you realize that would be regressive and would squeeze grandma and grandpa so tight they'd need to start eating Alpo, right?

There's one big reason why the post office loses money: universal service. There are places in this country where neither UPS nor FedEx will deliver a letter or package for any amount of money. It never ceases to amaze me that people think that we can just leave part of our society behind like that. What's next? Cut off the phone service to people who don't live within a mile of town? After all, USF fees go largely to pay for those people's service.

Also, we should note that the USPS uses private carriers to schlep mail across the country already, yet they're still losing money. A lot of money. Mostly thanks to decreasing mail volume and, just as importantly, ever increasing fuel prices.

Just double the cost of sending advertisements and the USPS will be operating in the black in no time. Either that or the ads will drop in half. Either way it's win win

Hopefully the latter.
