Good news for Tulsa

At least I think so . . .

Apache buys Cordillera, bulk of package Mid-Continent properties which will grow (and keep roots in) the Tulsa office:

And I just heard from a peer that QEP is closing their Tulsa Oklahoma City office and several jobs will be moving to Tulsa.  That's more high paying O&G jobs.  And probably some won't take the transfer which will open more positions here.

I thought these were both good things for Tulsa!

Clarify that QEP thing, will you?

OOPS!

QEP will be closing their Oklahoma City office and bringing some of the jobs to Tulsa.  Sorry!  Thanks for catching that!

QEP Resources?  Colorado based oil & gas company?

It is a spin off of Questar, which was based out of Utah, but I guess it now appears QEP is out of Colorado.

The verdict is still out on what Australia-based BHP Billiton will do with their Tulsa office, formerly Petrohawk, at Warren Place.  They have stated that they want to keep a Mid-Continent office in Tulsa (near the majority of their drilling operations) but no one really knows for sure since they already have a large Houston presence from when they purchased Petrohawk.  A lot will depend on natural gas prices I suspect..

As for more good news: Cimarex, which already employs several hundred at First Place Tower, has said they will occupy the entire 18 story Cimarex Tower and potentially have over 1,000 employees downtown in the next few years.  It's not HQ'd here (the corporate office is in Denver) so you don't hear as much about them but they are growing fast and will be a major player downtown.

I understood most of PetroHawk people will be out of Tulsa by March 1, so that's stinky news, but I was focusing on the positive.

Just curious where you saw Cimarex planned on having 1,000 here in Tulsa?  That would be good.

That is just what I heard from people in the industry.  Cimarex is growing fast and will occupy the entire building (as opposed to just a good chunk of it) because they foresee hiring several hundred more people on top of what they already have in Tulsa.

That is too bad if what is left of Petrohawk's Tulsa presence is moved to Houston.  The one guy I know there was worried that would happen since natural gas drilling in their biggest plays in Oklahoma and Arkansas has been scaled way back and an Australian company really only needs one U.S. office where Petrohawk was HQ'd in Houston.

Silly question, but are the people at Petrohawk here in Tulsa aware of this?

I know a few people that work there and none have mentioned it. In fact one of them has been trying to get a mutual friend of ours hired there.
