Is there anyway to protect your vacation pictures when you post them online?  I have seen where some folks have theirs and you cannot click and save.  I just got back from Mexico and would like to post some of my pics, but I don't want them stolen!  That happened to me a couple years ago when a woman took the pic I posted from Mexico and added it to her collection.  She was later congratulated for taking such a lovely shot!  This was a different forum.

Any ideas?

The answer is No.

Even if you use a sites private setting, all one has to do is use Print Screen on the computer and get it that way.

There is no way to protect them. The "right click disabled" hack doesn't really stop anyone.

My suggestion would be to watermark the photos. You can put one that is faint enough that it doesn't ruin the experience but if anyone else posts it, it will show up. The easy way is to put your name, email etc across the picture but mostly transparent.

Watermarking is good. Another way is to keep the resolution down to the point that they can't do much with them even if they do steal them.

Funny, they were talking about this topic on the "Focus Ring" podcast this week. If you are interesed, check it out at

If they're that good, let's see them.

Wow. So basically your shots are public once posted?

Publishing to a public domain- the internet- yep very public.  I don't post anything anywhere on the net, be it forums, photobucket or wherever that I don't want someone else using my image.

What's the rub on why you don't want people ripping off your images?

I think she said what her complaint is, she doesn't want someone else taking credit for her images.

If that's the case, yes waterark it or use Photoshop to put a copyright in a conspicuous place which can't be cropped out.  Other than that, don't post your photos on the internet if it annoys you when others kype your images

I'd put a big fat watermark across the middle of the image at around 20% opacity - just enough to see it but not enough to take away from the image.

But.. I don't even bother cause I don't care much as far as vacation or other personal images go. If it's action photos of a team or portraits or something similar I'll watermark them though because the parents won't buy them if you don't, they'll just steal them and print them off on their pos printer and say 'omg!1 look at my kid!11~~'

There are shots that I don't care about, but some of them are very special and I'd like to know how to do this "watermark" you guys are talking about.

Most photo-editing programs, even the limited versions which come with most digital cameras should have a feature under edit options to add a watermark of some sort to your photos.

Check whatever program you use to download photos to your computer and see if you have the ability to add text to your photos.

I don't know near as much about computer stuff as some of the others on here, I'm sure someone will pipe up if there is a specific program needed.
